Bluemour Melting Pot XXI - Like seriously, the polar ice caps have got nothing on us

Not quite seeing your point there. Can you step it out for me?
Yeah sure. Higgins and Goldstein are 32 next year. Ziebell and Cunington will be 29. Brown 28. I think most of the players younger than that have modest ceilings. Even if they were younger it’s not enough top end talent to be competitive with the best.

So, I think North needs to work out how it works toward its next flag. Topping up with ‘solid types’ won’t cut it.

I think you’re not a destination club for top end talent. I think all clubs are struggling to get in top 20 afl players. Blues haven’t grabbed one at any point and am not saying we are any better off.

But getting a flag winning list together won’t be done through trades for North. You therefore need to do it through the draft. Mid range picks won’t do it either.

So I think you need to strongly consider trading out players of value (Eg Brown) to get early picks in bunches so you can attempt to find your next group of champions.

That you’re not doing anything like that feels a bit defeatist to me.

We're looking for players in that age bracket
GC and Freo lol, what unbelievably professional environments they would've been
You've already agreed we have the best fitness guy in the business, who got O'Meara, Burgoyne back on the field
Maturity, recently became a parent
Realises he's on his last chance
Has more natural talent than 99.8% of players in the league, name one DFA that comes close on talent?
Worth a shot imo.

Worth a conversation with him, but Russell isn't a magician and we shouldn't just be assuming that we can throw any old run-down, unprofessional, ill-disciplined but talented player his way and have him turn out a Shaun Burgoyne. Part of being as good at his job as Russell is, is undoubtedly being smart enough to pick his battles, and knowing when someone doesn't have it in them to make the journey.

You're making a lot of broad assumptions.

GC and Freo haven't been great environments, sure, but Bennell stands out above and beyond all other injury-prone players as being one who has never helped himself.
As I said above, unfair to expect that Russell can get any and every broken player back to the elite level. O'Meara and Burgoyne strike me as professionals, Bennell...less so.
Becoming a parent doesn't always equate to maturing, plenty of irresponsible parents around.
He's had a dozen last chances, didn't seem to respect any of those either.

If the stars aligned, and everything came together for him, he'd be the bargain of the century. But all signs point to that being an absolutely minuscule chance, and the greater likelihood is that he ends up banished to the VFL for poor behaviour, before being delisted mid-season for acting up further.

You were always going to get Thomas and probably paid a little more than expected, having him bid on at #8

Pick 8 to 11 = 222 points. Take away the discount and it's 178 points. It wasn't a big deal and this kid is literally going to be a star.

I don't recall the exact deal and North did well, but are a 27y.o Polec and a 29y.o. Pittard going to be around when North are pushing again?
They did have good years and that's great, but list management is about more than just staying afloat.

Polec turned 27 only 4 days ago and is now entering his prime, has another 120+ games left in him, and gave us something we were badly lacking.

Pittard doesn't turn 29 until April next year, cost us literally nothing and finished top 10 in our best & fairest. Even Port fans have claimed it was his 2nd best season since he made the AA squad in 2016. We are all surprised and stoked by how good he has been. He's the best "steak knives" we have picked up since Wayne Carey!

Anyway, if everyone is happy then that's just fine.

That's all that really matters mate. :thumbsu:

Lol their post that Norf are still a chance for Papley was not a good example of a post.

"Reasonable logic" spare me.
Just going on past encounters. Not that post in isolation 🙂

It certainly deserves legendary status. The North folk sure know how to stick a fork in the Hombres.

I located the first thread and it has legendary status. The second thread starts off: “Continued from the almost 30,000 sympathetic posts version I provided here >”.

I can only imagine what it is like. LOL.

Who’s spot does he take? Newman or simmo will be stiff not to be best 22 every week

He takes the incredibly vacant spot of running defender, which we haven't had since Yarran.

Still disappointed we haven't recruited a mature mid to assist Cripps.

Yep. Definitely need to make a serious acquisition in the next 12 months. Hopefully we have a go at Wines.

Maybe not, but it won’t be our two firsts for those two alone

You would be expecting something for Papley and definitely a 2nd round pick coming back for Martin.

I loved the Essendon drug scandal thread on the north board one of the best, hilarious

Sticking it to them would be an Olympic sport if we had our way.........and the Olympics would take place every day of every year.

There's bigger "rivalries" in the AFL in regards to numbers & crowd attendances etc., but nothing approaches the pure, unbridled hatred we have for them.

I'm going to assume we won't see a high profile trade before 6:30pm? Papley, Hill, Daniher at least all happening in prime time? I'm working night shift tonight so after 8 days of following the trade period I'll miss all the action

Not sure why we here like using silly names for clubs but then again, I see plenty of 'Carlscum' elsewhere.

Agree. It's infantile.

EDIT: Seems that Sam Edmund got himself into a bit of trouble on SEN this morning for calling Papley pap-smear.
Didn't her him say it but heard the apology along with Lyon adding along the outraged 'How dare you'

LOL, Garry Lyon making moral judgement calls? Yeah.........well..............

Exactly. Especially on the Norf board. Apparently they are very "tolerant" tho...

I see no problem with throwing a Norf around here and there.

Hey mate, ALL of the club boards on this website have A grade wozzles, and we're certainly no different. I turn on them myself on a regular basis.

The real question you should be asking yourself is why do you choose to set your own personal standards according to the lowest common denominator?

Can the AFL really get in the way of when trades are posted, just for it to suit their agenda?
How exactly would that work?

Anyway, it has been alluded to here but apparently Daniher does want to/need to get out of Melbourne....for lifestyle reasons.
For Essendon to hold on could come back to bite, short and long term. He may well be forced to stay but this could be interesting.

I don’t really get the North Strategy. Seems a good way to remain stuck in the middle.
I for one will be happy when they don’t pulverise us into the ground. A bogey team as of late.

Fingers crossed that changes as of next year.

I’m probably in the minority, but I really hope we are aiming a little higher than Jack Newnes.

Granted that the DFA pool is watered down and every club needs solid vanilla foot soldiers, but I just think there’s potentially better on offer that add a point of difference to our 22.

I hope you're not calling Jack Newnes 'Vanilla'

Maybe.

They might do the Papley trade at like midday so the big question leading into the evening session is will Essendon agree?

There are a couple ways to do the narrative structure.

Some deals may by necessity need to happen earlier so the small fish don't crowd up the primetime slot.

Phillips, Pittonet etc. should get done at a steady drumbeat after midday is my guess

LOL, Garry Lyon making moral judgement calls? Yeah.........well..............

He's still allowed to make such calls but it's the grandstanding that's somewhat irksome and mostly insincere.

I thought Edmond must have pulled out aa beauty to have Lyon so outraged.....but it wasn't quite as bad as was made out to be.

Maybe Lyon can get Edmond fired, allowing the spotlight to focus on him so he can announce himself as 'the good guy'.
