AFL stated this year for free agents that the other club only has to match term and total dollars not front or rear loading of the contract. You think they’ll try and screw the Gold Coast to change that for the PSD?
You misunderstand, it will be a 1 year deal worth close to a million dollars. Then sometime next year we will give Martin a new contract.

Keen to hear from our ITK posters in the wash up as to WTF happened and why we didn't have a backup plan. Went from very definitive news close to the end to not being done at all.

Pretty disappointing night regardless of the machinations and who's at fault.

Feel for Paps who now has to try and keep his relationship alive while living in another state.

I am completely melting.
Sos failed. Not specifically because he failed to land Papley and Martin. He failed because it didn't improve our list, and that is his job.
Once he knew Papley and Martin weren't looking likely, he should have had plan b and plan c in his back pocket. No doubt the negotiations with Sydney and GC were difficult, if not impossible. But it doesn't excuse the fact that he failed to improve our list, and I cannot believe there weren't other players available that would have done that. This is a win or lose business - not a "i did my best" business. He lost. Big black mark against his name IMO.
Can I recommend a GC membership? Plenty of seats available.

He just needs to set his price for a 1 year contract. $1M/1 year.
Tell the Suns (and Dees) he's walking after the year is up.

Apologies if this has been discussed already, just been for a swim in the Gulf of Thailand to try and get rid of this blah feeling.

Does anyone know what the story is with nominating salary for the drafts? From memory, you can nominate a salary in the National Draft (Luke Ball did this), but not the PSD? Is this right?

Right. So postive hat back on.

Martin in the preseason draft.

What type of player do we go after in the ND with 9? Midfielder?

What small forwards are available this draft? Anyone we can get mid draft.

Would be good if we could nail a Eddie Betts or Jeff Garlett type rookie pick this year.
Pick 9 - best available

I have to say, this is a major blight on silvagni, there is playing hard ball and there is stupidity. We are not the mafia where we say," accept this deal or we'll cut off a finger", when it came down to it. If we ended up paying major overs for martin and giving them a future first, do you think it would matter in the long run. And how about dan butler or gray from port, just a major fu** up in my opinion. Stephen silvagni has beena fantastic list manager for us, getting great trades done and doing well in the draft since he came along. But this hard lines approach of having to win every trade eventually catches up with you , because clubs become reluctant to deal with you, because they think that they are going to get unders for every trade they do with carlton, and no professional list manager or clubs wants to come out looking like a loser. i just don't understand how this happened, i guess over time it become clearer, i guess.
What are you smoking?

We didn't get Papley not because of our offer but because Sydney didn't get Daniher, we didn't get Martin because the AFL gave the GC 4 1st round picks making a fair trade worthless to them and we will instead get him for free in the PSD so it's a win-win we get our guy and the GC send their message that no one will care about.

what the hell do we pay sos for!!

Charlie, Samo, Walsh, Weitering, McKay, Fish, Gov, Newman, Setters, Willo, Marchy, Plow, Gibbons ... i.e we pay him to build a team, to manage our salary cap, to retain our players, to use our draft currency to extract maximum value.

I literally just said the same thing to Mebby 30 seconds before I read this post.

So why would we select Jack Martin with 9 in the national draft, if you say Papley wasn’t worth pick 9? Papley > Martin every day of the week

At present, you are probably correct: Papley is better then Martin as it stands right now

But, I believe Martin has a much much higher ceiling. In fact, most folks do. In the right team, with the right coach he could be anything. Personally, I have always envisaged him as a goal kicking winger
Martin is 99 games into his career and I for one believe his best football (and his best football is truly excellent) is still very much in front of him

Its one of those speculative calls that's worth a gamble. If he wanted to come home, I would have him at West coast. Tommorow.

Regardless of the fact that SOS did not overpay for his two targets, there should absolutely be a review over how for the second year running we have missed out on all of our "gun" targets. Shiel, Cogs and now Papley. Good clubs get their men.
*havent won a final in 15 years
GWS got given extra cash to keep cogs, and they just got pantsed in a gf.
Sydney retained a player because they couldn’t land another

The Swans said from the outset that they wanted to keep Papley. I don't think they ever made a public announcement acknowledging he was on the table. Pick 9 and a future second for Papley. Worth around Pick 4 is he?

They acknowledged that 9 was offered in a deal with Essendon. They were keen to get a trade done.

Papley requested a trade to the Blues. Players and their managers don’t nominate clubs unless they believe there is a reasonable chance a deal can get done, and that both clubs will come to the party.

The points system is irrelevant to us. Winning games is.

All year we’ve been harping on about getting in a ready to go top end talent whether it be a talented small forward to compliment the big 3 or a capable mid, and skipping the point end of the draft because a) it is a poor one and b) we have plenty of kids. Papley was the man and we failed. Getting Martin for free will save some face.

No chance in hell we take Martin with pick 9 in the national draft.

If that was something we’d consider then we would have just traded pick 9 for him in the first place...

I may be incorrect, but I believe carlton tried to do just that. Gold coast were ridiculous in demanding 2 first round draft picks
