I’m hesitant on guttering the list, but some change could be good. Players that don’t perform under one coach could be very good under another. Up for a new coach to decide.

But yes, be great to see a coach come in and set clear unconditional expectations of the players.

Why would you cut off your nose to spite your face?

You would have to pay at least half of Mitch's salary to offload him to another club if reports are correct that's about $350k in 2022 we pay for him tonpay elsewhere.

Better to keep him - he knows what happens if he can't perform in 2022.
The flip side of that's the 350 thousand you're paying someone else, and the list position that he vacates.

Let's make something abundantly clear: Mitch was brought in for the same reasons Newnes and Newman were, to play ahead of Jack in his position as third tall and to get some variety between Jack and our other medium forward/tall options. The difference between the two is that Newnes is a professional and has given as much as he has to the role, where Gov has been overweight, injured, and otherwise hasn't contributed. Jack has come on in the time since in leaps and bounds, and is pretty bloody close to being inside the first 5 players picked every week.

For Gov to get back into the ones, he'd need to push Jack out (or find another role) and I can't see him doing it.

My two cents: trade him with our second (or a future first, if they want a first) to Fremantle for Cerra, and draft a KPF/HHF and a KPD with our first two picks. Offer to pay as much of his contract as you can to get Fremantle to accept the deal, and vacate that list position for someone who will actually play ones over the next 5 years.

I'm not sure whether it's worth shipping him out if he's on 350k. If we end up with a new coach he may want to get a good look at him and most likely a decent coach would back himself in to get more out of him. Who knows, but I'd be pretty sure any new coach would have a fair say in what happens with him.

You misunderstand.

The contract was posited as being worth about 700 thousand a year. 350 would halve that.

that's a worry - the players who've had enough are probably the very players we want to keep as they demand better!

I'm betting that they aren't our better players at all. More likely fringe players and if those types want to leave it's probably best for both club and player that they do. As long as SOS re-signs I'm okay with whatever happens.

Ah ok, I thought he was front-ended as well?

have Gov's woes this year been self inflicted or just bad luck? if the latter try him in defence as in all likelihood, Marchbank won't make it 😭
I have infinitely more time for Marchbank than I do for Gov. Marchbank has never shown up to the club unfit. Marchbank doesn't drift in and out of games like a feather in a hurricane. Marchbank isn't costing the club 700 a year to sit on the injury list or to have a specialised training plan midseason to get him to minimum levels of match fitness.

He looked to be as fit as he's ever been when injury struck this year and he was devastated, I remember watching him sitting on the bench and feeling bad for him.

campaigner is sitting on something ... probs his belly rolls ..

Don't think we needed to at the time, and IRCC we actually needed to pay him on the amount to meet the cap at the time (and not over, to endanger the % we needed to be under it to get the 105% in future years).

What a leviathan of a system the AFL have created.

In each case you can see a downward trend in games played.

Body not right?
Mentality not right?
Is he really an AFL footballer?

The guy obviously is not serious about playing footy.

Bit unkind, but it certainly gets the point across.

In another era he'd be a terrific player, but in this one he's just not endurable, fit or focused enough.

Seems like his body was shot before he came to us to me, more fool whoever it was that recruited him, I can't say I blame him for it.

Banjo strings have better tensile strength than McMuffin hamstrings.

I am not Kahmal mother****er ... This is the club I support and they bloody erred with McGovern ...

This is immaterial to the reality that now we are confronted with a player who is getting paid above the AFL rate for performances well below it. We need to make a decision on the following:

- is he going to be playing for us over the next 5 seasons in the ones? Yes/No, what role?
- what are our other options in those positions? Are they better/worse prospects than he is? Are they cheaper prospects than he is?
- what can we do to mitigate the damage of his contract size?

Sit down with him, and ask him what he wants. Be honest. Does he want to stay at Carlton? If he wants to stay at Carlton, we can renegotiate his contract to a maximum amount of 550, but with KPI's that if he doesn't meet them he can get 350. If he is unwilling to do this, we can and will pursue options for trade; where would he like to go? We are more than happy to pay half his contract to get him there.

The key here is to make the list position - regardless of who's in it - productive for the cost you're paying. Either cut your losses or double down. Freo would be a good bet because their forward line is rubbish and because they have something we want.

Okay Geth but I have to say, this time I haven't read your response as what I said really isn't worth all those words in response. It was a simple statement.
