Surely there is something to be said about depth, and he is better depth than we have had in the past, I would think. Guys like Lang, Shaw, Smedts, Palmer, Sumner and on.

No doubt. But if we bring in best 22 players our depth will end up being Newnes, Newman, Gibbons etc.

Plus we already have depth that is either better than Brodie or I think will end up better. Kennedy, Stocker, Dow etc

Magic?

Hawks trade 21 and Smith for 16

Cats swap their future 2nd for the Hawks future 2nd

Hey presto, magic
But Why don’t the cats just sign Smith as an unrestricted free agent and then do a pick swap separately that better favours them?

As Smith effectively has zero trade value due to UFA status, why unnecessarily include him in the trade?

But why?

When Geelong can sign Smith as a free agent, and then:

- keep 16 til draft night in case a player slides,
- trade it on the night to a club who really want it, for overs (which could be Hawthorn...),
- or package 16 up with one or more of their other first rounders to move much higher up the order.

I don't understand why you think they would trade for a free agent and in doing so limit their options, when they can take the free agent as a free agent, and leave a number of options available.

I don't understand TCP's posts on the no discussion thread. He mentions Treloar and then that we are looking to be involved directly with Hawthorn.

Why would we be trading with Hawthorn?
If we have a specific target in mind with someone like Stocker, then sure we can make a trade. But I am very nervous about trading him for a pick we take to the draft.

Probably trading picks to better position for other things.
And they presumably want to trade up.

Perhaps they see a player at 16 that will still be there at 21 and then better their position for next year?

Or on the flip side, Melbourne know he is unhappy and OOC next year, and want to get a deal done this year so he doesn't go cheaper next year.

2 good first rounders should suffice. They'll be ridiculous to do a Dodoro.

Hope Oliver and Saad are all sorted out early in the trade period, which ever way it falls. Don't want to miss out on Wines and Butler types again if clubs struggle to reach agreement.

Interesting that GC can’t afford treloar but geelong can afford Cameron, Higgins and crouch
It's because GC have had to overpay a lot of players to convince them to stay/come over.

Geelong can pay a lot of players unders because they get to be a part of a successful club and get to live in "country" Victoria, which is a big draw for some.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I think if Oliver and Saad are done early it would be a miracle.
We will pretty much pull the stumps after that you'd imagine. Re-sign Cripps and McKay, happy days.

If we get Oliver, we definitely won't be getting a "Wines" type. That's another B/B+ type. We will struggle to have the currency unless current players start getting traded.

Like Shiel, he rejected us when he had the chance, so stuff Treloar. Prefer Oliver, Merrett, Wines, or any other A grade Mid, if they're still available.

Saad rejected us. What's your thoughts on him coming on board?

21 for Saad perhaps? Then upgrade further if need be.
