I honestly think Dodo is the sole reason that trade period is 10 days instead of 3. Seriously get rid of him and you can cut a whole week out!**

** But part of me wants him to stay because he's had, what, 10000 years at Essendon to build a decent list and yet they are a shambles. I'd be worried if they fired him and actually got in a competent list manager.

crocmedia makes the bucks with trade radio & the AFL stays in the media for another fortnight.

They'd push it to a month if they could

Maybe, maybe indeed. Wait and see but I feel like we have undone the work we have put In over the last 5 years at least partially if this all goes through.
Bringing in two good players is hardly going to sink the ship. Admittedly they're on really good coin, but I can hardly see it being near some of the reported numbers and the guaranteed money would be much lower again.

And we're not paying them Collingwood money... If Stephenson is on the reported $600k then Saad seems pretty safe for the same dough. We could have offered Williams less money but then you don't get him as a FA and the trade costs different assets... is that extra ~$100k a year worth keeping draft assets? We probably struggle to get Williams & Saad if we have to trade for them, without really dipping into our futures.

Saad has been incredibly durable and consistent while Williams has had a few injuries in his time (nothing major I can remember?) but GWS do appear terrible at managing their players.

Weiters turned it on this year, McKay is emerging, TDK might have a claim for the #1 ruck mantle, Walsh is Walsh, Willo & Doc got back on the park, Setterfield seriously progressed, Fish returned to the lineup, Plow & Jones improved, Cripps will be better next year, Saad hopefully means SPS can get up the ground, Martin should get better in his second year, Williams adds much needed speed to our midifled mix, possible returns/debuts to the senior side for the likes of Marchbank, Kemp, Silvagni, Newman, Dow, O'Brien, Stocker, Philp, Honey, etc...

It won't be eroded by one trade period (unless we somehow adopt the Arden St & Collingwood strategies around staff, player & TPP management).

bretty boy is still convinced shiel will be at carlton..........

Regardless, players want assurances if they publically commit.

If anyone's reputation is going to suffer here, it's Essendon's.

Players won't be going "Hey, I shouldn't try to get to Carlton, because they can't do deals".

They'll be going "Geez, I shouldn't ever consider going to Essendon, because their players clearly don't enjoy being there, and when their players do want out they make it as difficult as possible for everyone."

Caldwell has been suckered in by a fat contract. But you'd hope his manager has made it clear to him that going to Essendon is a long-term commitment. Because if he gets there and finds it's actually a shithole then he's going to find it very hard to jump ship.

Carlton on the other hand....you know what, we may have had some difficult negotiations recently, but none of our players seem to want to leave.

Saad will be done today, am I ITK no, do I know how no, it’s just a feeling I’m tipping 1pm EDT.

Very late today is my guess - leaves tomorrow to focus on Cameron, Treloar and Dunkley, plus any little fish.

EDIT: Beaten by a HS article. Feels bad.

Holy shit though - if true, a bold play to pull the pin with a day and half to spare.

a) We've got another premium target we reckon we can get.
b) We're pulling a massive bluff to try and scare Dodo into calling up and capitulating.
c) We've just had enough of the BS and decided to take 8 to the draft.

Wonder if the Charlie news has any bearing on this. Is there a KPF we might look to draft at 8 as long-term insurance?
