He ran 3.13 or 3.15 in the 20m dash at his draft combine.

Carve it anyway you like - that isn't slow.

The Club could have chopped him, they didn't....who knows more?

Where did that put him in his draft class? Compared to other draftees it seems very slow, to pit things in perspective, Weiters at his draft combine ran 3.04, he’s a big unit and he’s not fast, yet he easily has Kennedy covered.

You keep quoting the 48 game stat, he has been in the system for five years now and due to a combination of factors has not been able to establish himself as a regular senior player. He's not a kid who hasn't been given a go. I like Matty and I'd love for him to make it but surely he'd have no future at the club next year if he couldn't force his way into the side and stay there this year.

The more quality players we add to the list the further he will drop down the pecking order.

Don't even bother. Rational assessment is impossible. Just sprinkle some navy blue fairy dust and all will be fine.

There's a reason there were literally no takers for a guy clearly on the table for nix. Even a team with zero inside mids was not interested.

Kennedy was drafted as a forward and made to play mid at two clubs....there's your problem right there.

He is a good forward.

Matthew Kennedy (NSW/ACT Rams)

Height: 187 cm
Weight: 88 kg
Position: Inside midfielder
Player comparison: Elliot Yeo
Strengths: Contested marking, clearances, goal kicking, ball winning ability
Weaknesses: Footskills, often rushes possession

Kicking: Average
Marking: Above average
Endurance: Above average
Speed: Average

And if he can't get fit? At what point do you cut your losses?
Depends who comes on board or who is already on board and lifts their games. If the likes of Cripps, Setters, Williams, Ed continue to perform then any or more of Kemp, Philp, Cuners, SPS, Martin, Stoker et al emerge, Kennedy is forward or out the door.

I edited the post to provide a better explanation prior to your post.
We routinely play a +1 which weakens the middle third to bail out our backline..
Our +1 is more often on or immediately behind the contest. We are usually 1v1 in the backline, unlike almost every team in the comp. As a result, if the midfield are beaten and slow to recover, the backline can be exposed badly.

rubbish.

Funny how despite that 'dead slow' number, GWS opted to take him at 15.....

Perhaps there are some who can see past a simple 20m straight line sprint?

no more from me.

I dont recall saying anywhere that it made him an awful player who shouldn't have been drafted?

Over 3.10 is a "slow" 20 time, you can't paint it any other way no matter how much you like a player. You don't even need to see his times to know he's slow... it's in front of you every time he plays.

Does it make you a terrible footballer? No, it just indicates that you aren't exactly fleet of foot.

For strengths I would add wet weather football.

I don't see that and that has nothing to do with Kennedy not being capable but to me, Setterfield is on another level as I feel his football IQ is superior.

I also don't think we've seen the best of Setterfield yet and even though his year was good, I thought it would ave been even better for what I saw in the pre-season, where his stoppage work was quality.
It may sound like a little thing, but Setterfield has the better vision and is happy to take the tackler on, whilst looking for the best option......ala Cripps.
At times this year I think Setters had to much of a defensive mindset at the stoppages and this limited his ability to hunt the ball more, Williams coming in might actually work to Setters advantage as Williams tends to sit off the back of the stoppage and sweep around if the opposition win the ball which should allow Setters to concentrate more on hunting and killing.

If Setters is playing a defensive stoppage role, I’m pretty sure that’d be by instruction.

Dow, LOB, Stocker, Kennedy and the rest, all get a clean slate.

Coach has shown faith in them, and we are on an upward trajectory with this list.

2 of that lot come good, they’ll be playing finals 2021.

Yep.

I reckon 12 wins and in the mix for the eight.

This may have been covered in earlier posts, If so, my apologies.

I like what I see in Kennedy and I wish Diesel would take him under his wing and show him what is possible to 'slow' players. I know Diesel was fast in almost all categories bar leg speed but I am sure his insights would be invaluable to Kennedy,

When people say players like Kennedy are "good in the wet" do they mean "their glaring weakness of pace will not be as badly exposed".

You haven't noticed that the style of play changes dramatically between dry and wet weather football?

Footy in the wet becomes much more of a contested slog with run and class usually not able to stand out nearly as much as it does on a dry deck.

You still have freaks like Pendlebury who are all class regardless of the weather (SPS probably our best example, he's absolute class in the wet as well) but generally it levels the playing field and even favours the less skilled contested ball players.

Kenendy's lack of pace is far less of an issue in the wet and indeed his strength in the contest and contested ball work can come to the fore in the wet, as it does for many others.

I agree that his lack of pace is equalised in the wet. The wet is also where quality ball users excel. Possession are hard come by so those who use it well are amplified.

Good players are good players. Fast players that arent real footballers get found out in the wet.
Exactly right, speed disguises a player mistakes and shortcomings.
At a slower peace in the game returns to fundamentals of skill level & footy IQ, both rare qualities, found only in good footballers.

Inside mid in the juniors, but when he was playing seniors at that age, it was as a lead-up target in the forward line.

Whoever made that player comparison is an idiot, because his pace and balance issues were as obvious then as they are now, while Yeo was super quick, and still has a fair bit of pace since adding weight and moving from half-back to inside mid.
