we're all in knots who the captain should be .

why do we need a captain?

we need an effective accountable leadership group represented at every line

Weitering responsible for the back 6
Cripps responsible for the centre line and
Harry responsible for the forward half

all three stitched together by the coach

Let them work out how they organize their own sections and interact with each other.

You break it down simply, compartmentalize it, it might just work.

Surely there’s a chip pass or three available to draw the opposition out of their zone, then a handball or another short kick to a player “between the lines”.
That's only been happening to us every game this season. Uncontested possessions by opposing players floating in the spaces in our defence, peacefully and blissfully as pressure is never near by.

Harry is not leadership material
If you are looking for a leader in the forward half I'm picking JSOS. But it's really a part of the field we have a real dearth of leadership. Truth be told, the whole list lacks real leaders

Why not try to form a connection with Melbourne Storm, and try to develop a combined culture between the two? They do leadership alright.

They're a byword for success in their sport, and we could do worse than to get their tackling coach in at the very least.

Flip it round - what on earth do they gain from partnering with us? More realistic tackle bags?

When Crippa stays … someone else as captain … let him focus on his footy again …

I agree with this. Sadly the pressure of captaining of a team that is expected to rise has become too much for him. The captaincy should be handed to Weitering (Walsh promoted to leadership group next season). Who says Cripps needs to be captain? Look at Dangerfield (who also cant kick a set shot to save his life funnily enough) Something is definitely mentally not right with Cripps and Docherty, you only need to look at Cripps remonstrating with umpires and Doch fumbling/ panicking in the back 50.

I think its pretty clear to everyone with half a footy brain this list is not a bottom 4 list. It's definitely top 10 and then it comes down to application and willingness to buy into a team mindset which we don't have. We desperately need a group of senior coaches who understand the list and its strengths.

I am going to put it this way: do not, do not, do not, DO NOT!!! turn around and at the end of this season make Walsh Captain.

Don't do it. Don't even consider it. Don't hand him that poisoned chalice.

Make Cripps or Weitering the solo captain if you need to change captains, and if you go with Cripps back him to turn it around. If Walsh is to be captain, let it be when he's in his mid twenties, we're not doing it out of a need to react to things AND it's the right move. Do not do it out of a misplaced feeling that it might fix or solve the entire situation we're in now.

The solution needs to come from within the club, and everyone within needs to be a part of the solution. Don't put all of that on a single person who is still learning.

Well said.

The argument for Walsh as captain now is the exact same argument that was used for Cripps as captain a few years ago: He's our best player. He leads by example. Making him captain will somehow force the rest of the team to adopt his standards.

If anyone now believes it didn't work out that way for Cripps, why would they think it would be any different for Walsh at this age?

formalize it, encourage growth, instruct.
we wouldn't know what we have, as we have a traditionalist suburban club mentality.
from 2000 lyon came to carlton as an assistant for 5 years, went to Sydney 2 years later was instrumental in Sydney's premiership
2 years after that, took saint to a prelim final. smashing his old club to pieces in the interim.

edit; wrong saad. lol

saad played with bullants won a B & F made the VFL team of the year, we let him go to gold coast , we paid a premium for him at the back end.

Maybe Malthouse didnt like kebabs , or couldnt see a lebo in a wartime bedtime history channel defensive box formation lol, who knows
Different Saad

I knew, from the second I made that post, that I'd get at least one of these responses.

This is short sighted pessimistic nonsense. This isn't even about Carlton or Melbourne Storm. This is about two groups with considerable resources and finances combining their efforts to become better.

They have plenty to gain from such a thing, just like we do.

Pretend I'm the decision maker at Melbourne and sell it to me.

The argument for Walsh as captain now is the exact same argument that was used for Cripps as captain a few years ago:

Same as Judd.

We don’t have many candidates, but for the for the next 2 years, and I know this is left field, but I would make Jones captain. He has face the end, changed roles and then thrived. A walk up start. Older player.

we should have made Simmo Captain and have let him go round again over Murph

Our defence would be fine if our midfield worked both ways and supported the defenders.

If our defensive game plan was crap, we would be getting 10 goals kicked on us every week. As things stand, our defence is a reconstruction in progress. Weitering and Jones are an excellent pairing as our tall defenders, Williams and Saad are new in our defence and have yet to gel properly with the rest of the defenders. We have Doc who doesn't appear to be himself at the moment, possibly due to the loss of Simpson as his partner in crime and he hasn't managed to make a new partnership with another defender yet. And then we have either Newman or Parks as the starting lockdown defender. Our lockdown third tall, Plowman, is currently out injured and we have Stocker, who is really a mid, playing as a small lockdown defender while we get Boyd up to speed.
The more I look at it, the more convinced I am that it's not the midfield. Let me rephrase that, not just the midfield.

I've seen examples of forwards, midfielders and backmen doing the point to handoff thing where no one goes with a gut running opponent.

It's everyone at different stages throughout a game. It's insidious. Getting another midfielder (or three) won't fix the problem.

Need players with an appetite for the hard stuff. Not just finger pointing and refusing to take any responsibility.

Makes too many bone headed mistakes. I think the captain needs to be Mr reliable. Not sure who that is on our list. (Other than Weitering or Walsh)

Absolute NO to co-captains. Crippa despite not playing his best footy right now is the natural leader. He should be made some Captain asap.

Doc should not be captain, maybe leadership group but his form right now should see him playing VFL if we are serious which suggests not.

Captain = Crippa
VC’s = Wietering and Walsh

The mixed opinions on Crippa is like the port faithful with wines two years ago. They wanted him out and now he’s the messiah. Same will happen with crippa. He’s not been in great form for 18 months but he’s broken his back for us and he will be fine once we get our act together
Absolutely correct!

I wish the 'supporters' could show some of the loyalty that they demand!
They dont just want to sack/trade you, they attack your character and ability also.

Soft!

Its just an opinion. I dont think he is captaincy material. Either step down from being captain and focus on your game, or move on.

Still hasn't signed yet even though he is supposedly backing Teague and thinks the club is going to quickly bounce back... its a massive spin
He was asked in the presser today if he could guarantee that he'd be at Carlton next year and he said yes!!

Your spin is hung out to dry
