The Carlton Football Club in partnership with the AFL has commenced its first year of the AFL Multicultural Program. Yuta Kobayashi, Community and Sponsorship Executive will use Australian football as a vehicle to get across the key messages of team work, leadership, harmony, respect and fair play in schools of northern metropolitan Melbourne.

David Matthews, AFL General Manager, National and International Development said, “Carlton has a rich history of multicultural involvement and see their commitment to the AFL Multicultural Program strengthening football's connection to the broader community".

The Carlton Football Club has itself had a number of multicultural players including greats such as Alex Jesaulenko (born in Salzburg, Austria), Mill Hanna (born in Lebanon), Kris Massie (born in Sweden) and current Carlton player Setanta O’hAilpin (born in Ireland) all coming from diverse backgrounds. This being said, Carlton sees the importance of giving opportunities as well as strengthening relationships with the wider community.

The Carlton area is a diverse area with a high proportion of residents born overseas, such as Malaysia (11%), Singapore (5%), Hong Kong (3%), Africa and the UK (3%). It has been stated that 5,500 residents speak another language at home in the Carlton area alone.

The program will encompass a six week/10 experience program which includes game visitations, opportunities to play during half time at an AFL game (Rd 1 Carlton v Richmond), player visitations and excursions to the National Sports Museum.

Carlton believes this program will further encourage community strengthening and inclusion, help personal development, encourage integration, and improve physical health. The program aims to reach over 1,500 students and their parents while the overall program (including five clubs) will reach over 12,000 participants in metropolitan Melbourne.

Hasn't the mix mentioned here changed dramatically from that of say the 60's, 70's and 80's? Anything that helps us towards further egalitarianism within society has my vote. :thumbsu:

I think it would be a smashing idea to have a base in India.

Have a look at what would happen to JR if he played another bad game.
