Which comments he didn't say much? The comments of the mess the clubs in points to the spill of the board and the performances on the field which anyone can see, this year has been horrific and the coach should be sacked from where I sit. The rest is speculation from the media who love controversy at Essendon as sells papers and gets clicks.
andleanback asked the same question, here is my reply to him:
The one where Rutten had to address the elephant in the room and all the players feel sorry for truck that they’ve put him in this position.

If it’s straight up just a change of president and a bunch of media noise, what position is Rutten really in that deserved a full debrief with the players and ends in sympathy?

Anyone blaming the media for this circus is way off the mark. If you seriously think all that happened was an innocent board meeting where the pres agreed to step down a week early and everyone unanimously voted for the peaceful transition to a new pres to keep carrying on the good work, followed by the media just making stories up about the coach's tenure and Clarkson and the impending red (and black) wedding at bomberland, then IMO you're being very naive.

Whether there were strategic leaks from one faction or another to further their agenda, or whether the media got hold of the situation some other way, there is nothing innocent about what is going on. For one thing, all the club had to do to knock this on the head within 20 minutes of those stories coming out was to say 'Rutten has our full backing and will be coach in 2023'. Done. Story over. But they didn't. While it's true that the club isn't obliged to come out and provide a narrative on every rumour that does the rounds, this is a completely different situation.

s**t, please meet fan.
Nothing innocent about it. Brasher promised us ruthless he didn't deliver by not removing a non performing coach and has been overthrown, so he should of been. The coach promised us blue collar defence and has regressed heavily this year - Looks like he has lost the players - Has to go! We don't need a running commentary on what is happening behind the scenes from the club they just need to get it done.

Counting Hird, Bomber and Worsfold as 'sacked coaches' isn't really a true representation. All were consumed by the saga, in one way or another. If the saga never happened, I have little doubt Hird would still be there.

if the saga never happened Hird would still be here!

if the war never happened Hitler would probably still be here!

thats a weird call

andleanback asked the same question, here is my reply to him:
He (rutten) is finished at the club and everyone knows it. Players are responsible and they bloody know it. The effort and application has been disgraceful the top ups showed more courage. I think the game plan and structure is a mess but the players gave up and they feel guilty about a really nice bloke getting sacked.

Weird? Why? I read a lot that we've sacked this coach and that coach etc, etc. It's not like those three were hired then sacked under conventional circumstances, unlike Teague, for example.

Nothing about his tenure has added up.

Remember that he got parachuted into the COO role when we were in the middle of an “exhaustive” CEO search. He was so incredibly impressive that we abandoned the search and made him CEO. He was clearly lightweight and it was a baffling decision.

His connection to the footy department remains unclear (to me at least). His fingerprints are on all the big appointments yet he seems to bear no responsibility for on-field outcomes. If footy is in his remit then he should be long gone.

Then there is the contract….$800k a year is big coin for a CEO who can’t deliver on core business in what is in reality a middling sized business. And don’t forget how the club failed to mention to supporters that it even happened.

Hasn’t fronted up to press once this year. Allegations made earlier this year never responded to.

The guy stinks to high heaven IMO - can only assume connection to Little is the explanation for his existence at our footy club. He must go if we are to build something sustainable.

i wouldn't say nothing has added up, the financial stability of the club is pretty sound to which Xavier deserves some credit, though the club delivering losses over shadows this obviously rightly so as that is its core business.

The 800k Salary for Xavier is a real odd one for me though.

Essendon in 2021 had a revenue of $56 Million with a profit of only $8.1 Million of which $7 million was from donations and grants.

An 800k salary when you are only really delivering a 1.7% real profit margin is pretty absurd - not sure how this stacks up against other clubs. or if it was COVID affected somewhat from the norm.

yes thank you, I agree. So not just a media beat up.

The elephant in the room would be all the media speculation wouldn’t it? Players would’ve been seeing all the media talk pop up given Monday was their day off and they weren’t in at the club with truck. They were sympathetic for the position he has now found himself in, not necessarily that he’s been told he’s finished.

The media always talks, it's just smoke. You don't have to bring it into the meeting room unless there's fire.

Camped out at the club is not just smoke. Did they do this with Noble and North - Noooooo they didn't. Coaches get sacked and boards spill. Because it is essendon they go into a feeding frenzy - like rats in a dumpster!!!

of course he was sacked because of the saga, not footballing issues..., but he was implicit in the saga (alleged) so the root cause that got him, was his own doing still

Because we allow it (probably because again, we don't have a process for anything).
Imagine if some bright spark at EFc had have thought through how things may be construed and had something similar to the following prepared for Monday's unscheduled board meeting:

"today's meeting is in repose to the news that was announced at yesterday's board meeting regrading the departure of the outgoing President. He was schedule to relieve himself of his duties as of next week, however due to personnel circumstances that has been brought forward and so today's meeting is required to determine his replacement."

Shuts down any story that the media might be looking for, and if pushed you can always continue with "this meeting has nothing to do with onfield results. The team will review the weekend's match like they always do and then report to the board in usual manner."

Would have taken 10 minutes to prepare. WOuld have allowed the club to remain above the muck. Would have given them something to fall back on when leaks started appearing elsewhere

But then when we sack Rutten we are lying cheats....... again. All I am saying is we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. Maybe they could have waited until after this weekend for brasher to stand down but maybe clarkson to North forced our hand this week.

Well when players are getting door stopped coming into the club, you do kinda have to address it. Otherwise you’ll just have players all talking about it in the locker room and it festers, he brought it out straight away.

But we wouldn't be (unless they did plan to sack Rutten on Monday) because the (non-existent) process that reviewed the game, and all the other games would have lead to a conclusion that Rutten is not our guy, and so we're moving on. And ideally, it would have identified months ago that Clarkson is looking to get back into coaching, may be suitable for our list, and so wed already sounded him out instead of running around like the proverbial chicken.

The biggest concern in all this crap is that the complete lack of understanding, governance and process that got us into the biggest shitstorm a decade ago, was roundly reviewed, and assumed to be improved, has just been shown to be no different at all to where we where in the lead up to the 2013 press conference. How anyone with a position of responsibility at the club still has a job just beggars belief.
Except for the fact that they are just as incompetent, if not more so, (and that they can't) the AFL should step in and appoint a caretaker board until a a management group with no ties to anything in the past, who are able to design and implement actual process, is allowed to takeover.
It's downright embaressing that after everything that's happened we are still an outright shambles

You're saying this as if its the same group of players attempting to learn the same thing over a 10 year period? Not only are all coaching ideologies different, the list is completely different apart from 2 players. Hird and Bombers partnership was entirely swamped by the drugs saga. It wasnt like 3 years of concerntrating embedding down a gameplan and building a list to execute it. The saga hung over them for 3 seasons, we lost players, lost draft picks and then the players were banned. Yes, bomber said after his year in charge that we needed to be better defensively, but then he was gone. So was Hird the next year.

Anyone who started under Worsfold were not coached strict defence due to the saga. 2016 (go out there and have fun) and 2017 (welcome back boys) were handled delicately by Worsfold for obvious reasons.

2018 is where this group needs to be judged from a team defence aspect. We missed finals, just, and the club said 'sagas over, time to get serious'. Team defence needs fixing, lets get Truck and copy Richmond. Truck has been in charge of team defence or gameplan for 4 years.

So right now pretty much our whole list has had a last 7 seasons of

Worsfold- no team defence

Truck- team defence

And they've been babied.

The group needs someone like Clarkson to come in and tell them how it is
There is cross over in players and leaders . The leaders under Hird and Bomber where there when our current leaders started. It is club culture.

F**K letting the afl anywhere near the club.

I thought the argument was that you can't really count bomber and hird towards the "oh, look they've sacked another coach" tally, because they fall into the had to be sacked category?

Hird jumped before he was pushed after a 112 point flogging (and several other terrible floggings in the three months prior). If he hadn’t quit the decision would have been made for him.

It was a sacking in all but name.

We have overthrown a president or he "stood down". Nothing else has happened it's just speculation. Australian media are scum of the earth just accept it and you will feel a lot better about the club! Things are never as bad as they seem, things are never as good as they seem

Hird was a different story. Wada appealing just before Anzac Day 2015 just made the bottom fall out of the place. Players were absolutely shattered and lost all motivation, hird knew they needed clear air to move on. Remember we started that season with a lot of the 22 not allowed to play any preseason games. They then came out and should’ve beaten Sydney in Sydney, ran out of legs. Then beat hawthorn who were premiers in a famous win, at the stage the players still loved James and were bought in. The wada appeal changed the whole situation.

If you can say everything you've seen since Rd 1 this year is never as bad as they seem, it sounds a lot like a "whistling past the graveyard" approach to me.

Either that or you are the most glass half full Essendon fan & if that's the case, don't ever change
