They’ve ****ed up here. This is experienced board members appointing a CEO, not the cafe manager choosing a new milk supplier.

It’s simple due diligence - he’s gonna be a senior leader, what is he affiliated with (now and previously) and let’s research that for possible PR issues. Take a day or two for any red flags.

The media and others found it in 10 minutes.

What it really shows up is what a joke of a process this was. It’s pretty clear Thorburn is just a mate of Barham or somebody else and was given the job. No due diligence cos they already “knew him”.

It just beggars belief.

If it's this specific church, and specifically a 2013 sermon buried back on their website, is that old sermon enough to exclude him from the process?

Or do you do your due diligence and establish whether the person, regardless of their religious affiliation, is the most qualified person to do the job?

My issue is that the current state of this club is such that entertaining the idea in the first place was always going to lead to more controversy and signs of ineptitude from its leaders. He comes from a background of overseeing dodgy banking practices which would be enough to give you reservations to begin with. Im sure that a switched-on board would use its values as way of steering around the appointment of someone affiliated with a known discriminatory institution like City on a Hill.

Im sure that a switched-on board would use its values as way of steering around the appointment of someone affiliated with a known discriminatory institution like City on a Hill.

Every high level banker is dodgy. That's why the world is imploding now. You dont get into them positions unless you are! Its just a matter of how well you cover your tracks.
