Everyone knows how much we love a drink in Baghdad

Although it claims to being the region where beer was invented, a few seasons ago Baghdad was effectively prohibited from selling alcohol.

Prices went sky high and suppliers went underground, but you still had to pay taxes and apply for and purchase trade licences.

Despite this there’s very little attention paid to paperwork.

Supplies primarily come through Iraqi Kurdistan in the north. It is the only area of Iraq where alcohol is still cheap and many of the minorities have moved there for work in the industry.

Whilst businesses in the trade are predominantly run by Christians and Yazidis, the consumers are ironically 80% Muslims.

In underground warehouses crates of alcohol are stacked to the roof.

Well-known brands sit beside local beverages lovingly arranged by alcohol types.

Most are destined for Baghdad's remaining alcohol outlets, bars and nightclubs. But corruption is booming at every checkpoint along the road, and bribes are required to enable the booze to pass through.

But where there’s a will there’s a way, right?

Whatcha havin?

I didn’t hear your call as I was busy shaving my ears.

Probably wise, the lads lead you into a private drinking den in Baghdad.

Anyhoo, welcome to the potentially endless pub crawl that is the SweetFA.

Minor problem with the Government in Baghdad banning alcohol, but there’s other ways to have fun right?

Don’t worry though, your chances of being fined or worse is negligible.

Many small outlets have closed their shopfronts and only sell alcohol through secret hatches.

Thanks for the invite to your salubrious establishment.

Pugsley is it too early to order champagne to celebrate our upcoming GF win?
