Boutique Stadium in Melbourne

one of Carltons biggest financial downfalls was princess park stopped being used for AFL games. they made money from their own home games as well as renting it out to other teams for home games. i doubt if it could ever be used for proper AFL season games as the Blues knocked down ont of the stands behind the goals and build a new training and admin facility
Princes park

I believe they should upgrade princess park to hold around 30,000 and demolish Etihad and play as many games at the MCG as possible where the crowds are always bigger. For example Melbourne play dogs at Etihad where they get 30,00 if it was the g it would get 40 big difference

Buy Etihad now AFL then hold on to it for 10 years and in that time delvelop a 35,000 roofed stadium and move the following teams there which would cost around $400 million to build.
North for 8 home games.
Bulldogs for 10 home games + 1 home game at MCG.
St.Kilda for 11 home games.
Melbourne for 4 home games ( Against low drawing interstate teams)
Geelong for 2 home games.

I've said this mutliple times, but i'll say it again. Etihad is a fantastic venue its number one problem is that it's in Melbourne. It will always be compared to the MCG and will always come up short. It has a roof, is close to public transport, is close to the city and for 95% of the time meets the capacity needed.

The fans don't seem to like it though. I personally think that the food is really bad (most sporting event foods are bad but plastic meat stuff really) and the playing surface isn't great either.

Why can't St Kilda play games at the 'G. Geelong shouldn't be forced to play another home game not at KP or the 'G once Etihad is bought out and the minimum games contract is ripped up.

hello

ive read bits and pieces in posts about a call for a boutique stadium in melbourne.
being up here on the coast i havent been able to follow the discussion, but what is the talk about?
a greenfields site? if so where is the likely spot?
or a rebuild of existing training ground/VFL ground?
what type of capacity?

would something like metricon fit the bill? capacity of 27,500?
its a fairly simple structure for 3/4 of the ground with two decks covered by roof (but obviously for climatic conditions the roof would be sealed at the back so no cold winds to flow through), with remaining 1/4 having the corporate boxes, clubrooms etc? plus a hill section like the AO?

We've already got a boutique stadium in Melbourne, it's called Etihad, with just over half the capacity of the G, with a roof.

personally geelong should play all their games at KP, apart from the easter weekend when it is geelongs home game. why do geelong have to be disadvantaged and play collingwood at their home ground when its a geelong home game

The reality is all clubs should be able to play all their home games where they like subject to a minimum standard and the integrity of the fixture (i.e you can't sell home games to other clubs).

seeing geelong play a "home game" at etihad against the kangaroos was a disgrace. heck, the MCG would have been a bigger advantage for the Cats

Kidding me... Why would they demolish Docklands when the AFL is so close to taking over ownership? Perfect size 95% of the time for Bulldogs, North, St. Kilda and big sides playing small interstate teams (GC, GWS), roof, pretty much in the CBD. Only more money to be made when the AFL takes over and I suspect the surface will improve with less events clashing during AFL season. Not as good as the MCG but one of the better Australian venues.

Didn't Cricket Victoria or whatever dull name they're called since the ACB franchised their name to Cricket Australia, well didn't they move to the Junction and isn't that why St Kilda ended up going to Moorabbin?

They did. And it looks like it's going to be awesome. I'm hoping they move as many first class matches as possible there once complete.

should have kept Waverley

Maybe.
It was a bad design too.
However a new ground built around that region closer to railway station was the way to go.
Unfortunately we had Wayne Jackson as the president at the time and being seduced into another inner city stadium not really needed was his legacy with worse design and all.
That is the boutique stadium built on purpose not to hold a much bigger crowd like Waverley Park because it then meant they could get more money for the profiteers with forcing people to book reserved seats. It has worked. They "educated" the minnions and most bought it hook, line and sinker.

The fact there is no ground out in a more central part of Melbourne Metro region is one of worst things the league has done in last 20 years.

No doubt lost a lot of regular football goers from Gippsland region and outer eastern and southern suburbs that did travel to Waverley.

All we have now is two grounds in inner city in a metro region that spreads out well past 40 km's.
Thanks Wayne Jackson.

St.Kilda left Junction Oval for Moorabin before most of us born.
There was some fanciful romantic talk by some outsiders of St.Kilda returning to St.Kilda after generations but was never realistic at all. Football was never in planning for this cricket Victoria plan. They left Seaford to goto Moorabin as their training base for future.

Other than the MCG Vic haven't had a ground up to crickets requirements to hold a Shield Final for some years now.

In The Phoenix Rises, Ross Oakley says that he was told by John Lill (MCC Chair) that money was put aside for the development of Punt Road oval specifically for first class cricket.

As we saw it, most cricket matches other than Tests and international one-day games could be played at smaller venues (John Lill told me money was spent on Punt Road Oval for this purpose)[/QUOTE]

would have been good to have a downsized version of Waverley after 1999, say around 55k, but with upgraded/modern facilities.... a ground that Hawthorn and St.Kilda could proudly call home
