Bowers gone..

Replaced in the short term by Stephen Wright, fmr Tigers boss. Dont know much about him.

Pity he is not available. Very highly regarded. In this time of change we are indeed fortunate to have input from him & John Reid. Am feeling highly positive at this moment.

The change from Tony Kelly to Angus Johnson was a watershed day for our club. Nothing but positive vibes since AJ took the helm.

I for one feel the need to sing 'ding dong the witch is dead' from the Wizard of Oz.

He portrayed an air of arrogance, and was disrespectful to members AND non-member FANS, as did Tony Kelly. Year after year of bad financial performance. Questionable decisions and direction included in that bad financial performance.

And as Ginger Greatness said:
I take it that the line item marked "merchandise revenue" on the 2010 P&L is not going to set the world on fire then... In fact, it will be interesting to compare that item with the line items marked "legal fees" and "boffins who designed logo and jumper".

Definitely did not embrace the emotional side of AFL Football - otherwise he would not have dismissed the concerns of members and fans over the jumper issue.

I for one am greatful that a poor off field era is over for the Lions, and that today we start to turn the corner. I still compare the way Port Adelaide addressed their 'branding' change, to the way the Lions did. And thankfully we can now say that the two key players in that in Tony Kelly and Mr Bowers have moved on.

A positive day for the Club. We're heading in the right direction. (or should that be Wright, even if only temporarily)

Could not have put it better. The only time I dealt with MB - the jumper - I got a feeling almost of contempt. The thought that he was fallible, and things could be done better, was not a concept he could grasp.

best news i have heard out of the lions camp for months. hopefully we will now start to build a strong off field team and have some stability to nuture what could be a very young and competitive on field list. pity he didnt leave years ago.

Everyone email Angus Johnson and tell him to speak to Michael Conlan.

May just need his nose pointed in the right direction.

Absolutely! He would be perfect. Good idea

On another note, I think the nail in Bowers' coffin was the Fev 'flashing' fiasco. The board hung him out to dry before any investigation took place

I don't know of Michael Conlan's history TBD...could you put me in the picture please?:)
Almost got the Melbourne CEO job in 2008.

Ex-fitzroy Star Conlan On Short List For Melbourne's Ceo PostThe Age
Tuesday March 11, 2008
Jake Niall and Caroline Wilson

FORMER Fitzroy star and ex-AFL marketing executive Michael Conlan has emerged as a leading candidate for the Melbourne chief executive's position.

Conlan, an executive for Reebok's Asia Pacific division based in Seoul, is believed to be among the final short list of three candidates, vying with Australian Open golf boss Paul McNamee and Geelong's chief financial officer Stuart Fox.

On this historic of days, can I plead for Duritz to be "un-carded"?

I respectfully submit he should be permitted to revel in today's events, and unleash hell on the Bay, when it is inevitably suggested that Bowers left as a result of his being unable to work with 'Crazy Vossy'.

That Tim Clarke is an idiot... how is this a negative?

This is the brightest day we have had all year... apart from beating Collingwood!

Obviously Tim Clarke has no idea about anything to do with the Brisbane Lions. Somehow managed to paint this as a negative!!!

Yeah, apparently it is "shambolic" to remove a chief executive who has presided over a sustained period of poor performance, to temporarily replace him with a highly regarded and successful football administrator, and to set in train a process to find a suitable permanent candidate.

Sounds like Bad News Bears/Lions to me.

What a difference a year makes.

I spent these months last year pierced off at the fiascos that were unrolling under Kelly and Bowers. I'm now feeling genuine excitement - not at the thrill of the kill, but at the excitement of what might be for this Club in the future, if we get the right people.

Angus Johnson has impressed me so far. Now is the chance to put the icing on the cake on his early months in the role, by getting the right person as CEO.

Andrew Ireland can come back any time he wants - he's shown he can fit into our Merged Club and it's culture. Alternatively, Mick Conlan is the experienced Senior Executive for this job, who has Lion history.

This Tim Clarke fellow is making it read as though all this rain we’ve been having [players/coaches and CEO departing] is a catastrophic flood??

On the contrary Mr Clarke – step back and look at the bigger picture for goodness sake!!

All this ‘rain’ is actually breaking the drought – bring on the growth! :thumbsu:

I like many others can't really say I knew much about what went on, and how much was Bower's influence but the buck had to stop with him. The hard work was not done the right way. We should not have been financially struggling and we should not be struggling for supporters here and especially Melbourne. New day for Brissie!

Once again baffled by some sections of the media's take.

Haha, apparantly Bowers wasn't a victim of the review but in fact "has decided to join the exodus as he searches for a fresh challenge." I cannot believe how they can't know that he has been told to move on.

Wow, either a couple of extremely clueless journos...or dare I say it, poorly disguised agendas.

Give it one, two months max and they will announce the old jumpers will be returning..... Its a great day for our club.

Bring on 2011 ladies and gentlemen.

I remember when the original piss stain jumper was introduced, it was revealed that jumper designs are lodged with the AFL and locked in for a minimum period of two years. So we may be stuck with the Paddle Pop for another year yet.

By Tim Clarke
THE increasingly shambolic off-season at Brisbane has continued
What, a successful trade period allowing one of the best in the business Hadley to weave his magic? Fev cleared. New administration. "Losing" Gubby Allen. Progress on the social club at Logan. Hiring assistant coaches with half a clue. News that the football department would be expanded.

With players leaving in droves,
<Calling 'Exodus Watch'> Rischitelli was the one who left.

Brennan and Sherman were traded. Selwood was delisted.

the club’s salary cap issues almost forcing more out,
I almost got with Miranda Kerr once.

and star forward Brendan Fevola disenchanted after his treatment over indecent exposure allegations,
The men resposible for that treatment are gone.

Bowers’ departure completes a miserable early summer.
I'll admit the Shanghai defeat cut deep.

Yes, but all they have to do is tell us that we'll be reverting to the more traditional design in 2012, and the wounds will start to heal. Don't have to wait until the end of 2011 for that - tell us that now, or when the Club's membership drive begins.... help make those disenfranchised by this issue (like me - a non-member for the first time in 12 years in 2010) come back to the fold.

I guess one step at a time for all that.... today was one giant leap for all lion-kind.

Melbourne got out of that with respect to their silver clash strip when Jim Stynes took over. If the club was looking to rebuild under a leadership, when things have gone to shit under the old management, I can see the AFL relaxing that restriction.

The AFL rules seem to be flexible if they want them to be.

As a fellow person who dropped his membership for the first time I would much rather the club come out and change the processes/attitude that lead to the change in the jumper than merely changing the jumper itself.

The jumper is a symptom of a bigger problem and personally I can wait for all the symptoms to clear up for a bit as long as the root cause is addressed.

I have always loved the Club, but I feel very proud of what has been happening in the last few weeks. It is like a rebirth.Don't care what the media says, we are definately making an effort to turn adversity into success.

Yep, I honestly think that in years to come we will look back at season 2010 as the turning point.

The recession we had to have. The heart attack that shocks you into getting healthy.

The club, under Angus Johnson, has responded brilliantly to crisis and in the process done a full medical, eliminating every wart, cyst and tumour and put it back on a regime designed to restore it to full health.

Geez I'm excited. The results may not become apparently overnight, but the structures that have been put in place will slowly but surely bear fruit.

I won't name them specifically, but there is a Lions supporter who posts on here who is extremely well known for their knowledge of the people and internal dynamics of the club, and he/she (;)) recently remarked (not on here) that there were some very good people still at the club who cared deeply for it and who were determined to get it back on the right path.

I think it's fair to say those people have had a win and have wrested this great club from the hands of those who had lost sight of what it was all about.

****ING GO LIONS!
