Hey guys
Considering Hawthorn are needing another tall down back and Boyle's lack of form since coming back from his injury, Do you think it would be worth sending him to the backline? This is were he started his career and I think it may give him a few extra weeks in the seniors to regain some of that form he was in last year. Im a fan of Tim Boyle and believe he could play a role in our backline similar to that Jade Rawlings did. This may also open up a spot in our forward line for Thorp/Dowler.
The positives from this may be three fold:
- We may discover that the tall defender we need is right under our nose
- Boyle may rediscover some form
- Give the opportunity for one of Thorp/Dowler to stand up and provide a very dangerous third forward come finals.
Any Thoughts?

Why does everyone just assume that a forward out of form goes back and gets the form back ?
Boyle hasn't been working hard enough in the forward line, how is he going to sustain the effort to support his mates in the backline ?

i think it's a great idea, he's just not finding the ball at the moment, if you put him on an opponent, that will no longer be a problem. He certainly continues to have great agility for a big man, i think he'd go alright . . .

its worth a try, with Buddy/Rough working great as a duo, i think he struggles to find a place in the side up forward, even with good form...

Was thinking exactly the same thing. He is a pretty good field kick too, so could free him up a bit.

He's getting canned on this board for his form at the moment, but it seems pretty obvious to me that he is playing to coach's instructions and pretty much sacrificing his game to act as a decoy.

I think we'll find him down back if NM load up on talls in the forward line tomorrow.

No cigar.

He's playing a role in the forward line and if he's not up to form for the role he should be in the Box Hill Hawks to regain form rather than the backline.

If you send him to the backline because Nth Melbourne are playing some talls it is showing a complete lack of faith to the players down back who are there to do a job.

Either he's good enough as a forward or he ain't. Others await if he isn't.

I think some of you guys are being harsh!

Boyle's arguably 'competing' against two of the best forwards in the league this season for opportunities.

There have been minimal games where the entire forward line (Franklin, Roughead, Boyle, Williams ect) have played together. There are a few reasons why one player hasn't had an impact: chemistry is yet to form therefore match practice will delay an influence ect.

Willo has had some ordinary games by his standard, but has almost had to reinvent his role in the side since Franklin and Roughie's dominance appeared.

It's obviously really hard for 3 functioning tall forwards to combine and prosper in any team, let alone one with two of the top five goal kickers for the year.

I like the idea of trialling Boyle in the backline, it obviously isn't working atm for him in the forward setup and we never know what he is capable of down back until we try it!

He is unnacountable in the forward line. Why would it be any different down back?

Agreed. Seems to be a lead, mark and kick player, like Willo. Maybe that's our problem - they are too similar and don't do enough of the other things.

Other than he's playing to instructions and the balls not being kicked to him he'd be to slow down back. A backman needs to be quicker than his opponent now days (can't hit the arm, push under the ball, touch the back). About the only guy he'd be quicker than is a hobbled N. Thompson

i always saw Boyle as pretty quick for a big guy . . . ala Roughead.

I'm all for trialling him down there, he was a strong contested mark before he did his hammy last year too . . . he's not just a lead and mark forward.

Because He's not kicking goals and isnt ''competing'' in the forward line, doesnt mean he cant run, chase and tackle. Put pressure on the opposition etc.

Just because he is up against 3 class forwards doesnt give him the excuse not to apply pressure.

Throwing Boyle down back is just silly IMO. If he can't find form up forward where he's meant to play then its back to the 2's like every other player.

As if, who says he isn't?

And he can't find form in the forward line because his opportunities are limited. Maybe the forward line isn't where he's suppose to play.. there is better scope in the back line where he doesn't have to play in the shadows of Franklin, Roughead and Williams.

He is playing a role in our forward line and playing it according to Clarko's plan, so why shift him?
Name 1 team in the competition that has a forward line as good as ours?

Kipster....Please enough of the 'he is playing his role' nonsense.

If you mean, not having any influence on any contest as his role you are correct.

His role is to:

  1. Kick goals
  2. Contest the ball in the forward line
  3. Keep the ball in the forward line.
  4. Chase and tackle when he doesn't have the ball
In that order.

He has not done any of the above at any reasonable level for any length of time for quite some time.

Hope i have cleared it up for you and others who claim he is doing his job.

If he does play this week and it is a big IF...he is on his last legs.

Who says he is??? Anyone who actually watched the Adelaide game would of seen his total lack of defensive pressure. If you can't see that..well didums for you.

As for playing in the back. It shouldnt and wont happen.

In our 1 loss for the season Scott Welsh kicked 4 out of 15 goals. No one else kicked more than 2. Would having Boyle as an extra tall in the backline have changed that? Unlikely.
