I think you should both get naked and wrestle in a vat of honey.

Turkish oil wrestling. You know it's right.

I don’t disagree it was a freak footy accident but the AFL are trying to eliminate those especially those that can cause concussion. I think Maynard get off this time and the AFL adjust the rules next year to discourage this action.

What action do you think the AFL will discourage?

Any motion which involves being elevated, two feet off the ground at once?

Bracing with the shoulder. ATM the rule seems to be if you choose to bump the onus is on you not to hit the opposition high. I think they’ll extend it to include bracing with the shoulder counting as a bump.

What are you supposed to do in the split second? In that situation you don’t choose to bump, it’s literally instinctive. Your body does it. You don’t think about it. You protect vital organs.

The whole thing is a farce.

Bracing for impact?

Bracing is an instinctive mechanism of self-defence.

If it comes at the expense of other safety I can’t see it lasting too much longer.

I can't even conceive of what sort of rule you're contemplating, but a player who doesn't brace for impact risks their own safety in the most foolish possible way.

It's instinct, baby.

His options would have been to brace with his shoulder, his forearm, or his face. Which do you recommend?

Edit there is always the Ollie Henry dance hands option…. Albeit Henry was celebrating a goal but maybe he was protecting his pretty face as well…

You want to hope that the point of the elbow doesn’t land over the heart. As soon as you think of guidelines for players actions, other ways of causing injury will emerge. It’s a contact sport.

Yep they can’t just make up new rules on the spot every time somebody gets hurt.

This circumstance might in fact be a direct result of the 666 rule too, given Bradshaw was on a break and Maynard’s only option was to run full spreed in his direction and attempt a spoil.
