Geez, if the AFL's position is: "Leaping forward in the air with force to an opponent running in the opposite direction holds a key risk of badly injuring their opponent. It's a dangerous action to undertake & it breaches the duty of care owed to the other player."

Then why haven't they reflected that position in the rules - that's the obvious place to include this assertion and to communicate it to the players - waiting for an event like this to happen is simply reactive management of the game
Yeah and why did they classify it as rough conduct when they had the option to classify it as forceful front on contact if they are going this route.

A more 'upright' jump? Further away from the ball?

End it now. The AFL has nothing.
Exactly, is the suggestion to wait until the attacker is closer and hope that then a smother or tackle can be made?
Which attacker would do that?
AFL should have a new slogan, "Let's make footy netball."

Scott Stevens part of the 3 man panel.

In round 3 of the 2011 season Stevens suffered a concussion injury. Stevens retired on 21 June 2011 due to the cumulative effects of numerous concussions.

Criminals the AFL

Stevens was part of the panel which cleared either Lynch or McCartin, I wouldn’t worry unnecessarily.

I’m no lawyer, but it’s not how I’d prosecute it. The weird part is that it reads to me like he contradicts himself by first suggesting it’s an uncommon occurrence to attempt to smother the way he did only to then suggest players need to think about these actions and exercise DOC. How the * are they meant to do both? If it’s uncommon the consequences are more often than not going to be unforeseen until it becomes common ala sling tackles that weren’t a thing 20 years ago.
Exactly. In 10,000+ acts of smothering across the league this year, 1 has ended with 2 players colliding.

The way he affects this smother is by jumping from some distance away from Brayshaw, this increases (not reduces) the likelihood that the 2 trajectories do NOT meet (collide).

Both of these points DECREASE his ability to FORESEE

They're saying he should've jumped more upright 🤢

He jumped TOWARDS THE BALL AND TOUCHED IT!
I just ran a few steps then immediately jumped up. I wasn’t running fast but I landed forward of where I jumped.
Mind you I knew this would happen because life experience has already taught me this is how physics work.
