Re: Brendan Fevola

I have to say I am glad we got rid of Fevola because frankly he was just too much of a disruptive influence at Carlton. I wish we had done it a lot earlier to be honest.

I've never had a lot of time for his selfish efforts on the field and his (too regular) "incidents" off it.

Having said that, I'm not the type of person who would like to see him fail now that he has moved on, even more so because I like Brisbane as a club.

I wish him well now, I hope he finally grows up maturity wise and has a great year on the field. He'll be a great addition the Lions if he does.

Re: Brendan Fevola

Leave Melbourne and you are instantly less rated by blokes like Sheahan and Walls. Probably the reason why players like Black, Drummond, Clark and Mal Michael continue to be shafted when it comes to All Australian selection.

Unlike Walls at least, Sheehan [a Tasmanian I am forced to admit] makes a virtue of the fact that he very seldom leaves AFL-central, unless of course Pratt invites him aboard the Judd Cessna 15 seat express- cocktails at 35000 feet anyone? Not likely to happen again, I'd imagine.

Anyway, there's a bright side to the lack of attention from the Melbourne hacks- they pay little attention to anything occurring beyond Geelong to the South and Lygon Street to the North, so sides such as ours tend to fly under the radar, which, of course, is how we prefer it.

SIMON Black says one player won't take the Brisbane Lions to a premiership, even if that player is Coleman medallist Brendan Fevola.
...
"It's an old cliche but it's one week at a time. We need to build the castle, and that starts this Saturday (against the Bulldogs)," he said.
...
"The one thing you learn though is you can't play finals until September and there's a lot of work to do before that." Black nominated Saturday night's Gabba rivals the Bulldogs, along with Geelong and St Kilda, as teams to watch.

Um...I thought we were playing West Coast this week. Do these reporters even look at the fixtures.

Ex Carlton chief says sacking of Brendan Fevola was a mistake

  • Robert Craddock and Paul Malone
  • From: The Courier-Mail
  • March 24, 2010 8:36PM
"I was very disappointed to lose him. I can tell you it would not have happened in my day or (former club president) Dick Pratt's day," said Elliott.

"He has never kicked 100 goals and I don't think it will happen at the Lions," Elliott said. "Put it this way, he had a better chance of doing it at Carlton when he had Chris Judd giving him the ball than at the Lions with (Simon) Black."

... with differing opinions on how Fevola should adapt to his new club and his partnership with Jonathan Brown. Former Geelong forward Billy Brownless, who used to play beside the great Gary Ablett Sr, said Fevola needed to be "selfish" in his desire for the ball.

We won't sledge Fevola, say Eagles
TIM CLARKE
March 24, 2010 - 3:08PM

Eagles midfielder Adam Selwood said neither controversy was likely to be mentioned by West Coast skipper Darren Glass, who is primed to play on Fevola.
"I don't think so - being down at full forward there is only the full back and I don’t think that is Glassy's game anyway," Selwood said.
"He likes to stay quiet and be the silent assassin, and punch the ball when he does not want him to. And Fev probably enjoys that sort of stuff."

The Bingle case has been a particularly egregious example. No, she doesn't appear to be a rocket scientist. No, she's not Mother Theresa. No, she does not have much luck with men, or cars or advertising campaigns. But am I alone in feeling deeply creeped out by what looks to be a coordinated assault on her across the full spectrum of old and new media?

Where's all the hatin' on the Fev? Oh, that's right, he's a sportsman so he gets free pass.

Either Mr Burmingham doesn't read the papers or he is pretending there has been no negative press on Fevola to create an angle.

Ironically, if he wasn't a sportsman, no one would give a stuff.

No, but it does signal that the story's running out of steam. Fingers crossed that no further wood is added to the fire.

Re: Brendan Fevola

Can't wait for the 'Fev Show' to begin, especially the Easter Thursday edition. It'd have to be the most anticipated home and away match since Carey faced off against North.

Re: Brendan Fevola

Brown

You could understand if some of the younger players were a bit intimidated by Fev when he arrived. An older guy who is a bit of a superstar, they might have expected him to be a bit aloof. Nothing could be further from the truth. He gives of his time as generously as anyone I've met, and it doesn't matter whether it's the coach, captain or the youngest player on the list, he's always got time for everyone.

Fev can win flag for Lions, says ex-Blue

Josh Kennedy:

"Obviously there are a lot of different stories out there about Fev, plenty of them aren't true," Kennedy said. "But in my experience, I just consider him a really good friend. At Carlton, he was so good to the young guys. He always looks out for his mates. Talk to the guys who have played with him and they will tell you he is one of the guys you love playing with because you know he has always got your back."

The new pairing has certainly got Lions fans excited and Kennedy had no hesitation labelling them the best one-two punch in the league. "Before, you would probably have looked at (St Kilda's) Nick Riewoldt and Koschitzke, but Brown and Fev I think that pairing is in a league of its own."

Re: Brendan Fevola

Bret Thornton

"This one's been brewing for a while. We sort of got it out of the way a bit a couple of weeks ago, but that was a pre-season game and next week for four points it's going to be full on," he said.

"Brendan's going to be going 100 per cent we're going to be going 100 per cent so it's going to be great.

"A few of us caught up with Brendan a few weeks ago after we played them in Melbourne. He loves getting on the texts and getting inside your head, but it's all part of it and we're really looking forward to it."

Re: Brendan Fevola

i just want to say that i hope fev kicks a bag for the lions this year, i am a carlton supporter, but i am team fev all the way. he has been more of avictim than a villian in my eyes, i am ashamed that he was booed by carlton supporters when he played against us, they ARE feral as far as i am concerned. its been an absolute heartbreak for me to loose fev and it was agony last night not seeing him on ground. he is a super guy he has done many people a lot of good turns over the years but you never hear about them. i hope he kicks 100 and sticks it to everyone, no pun intended on the sticks bit. i wish you and you're extremely classy and dignified wife and kids all the best up here. you will always be a legend in my eyes nothing will ever change that.

Re: Brendan Fevola

A lazy 11 shots at goal today from Fevola in his first hitout for you guys... without even dominating.

Had Glass on him all day as well letting Brown run riot.

I think I have you guys as my second team now. Well... till Fev goes anyways ;)

He tried his heart out didn't he, I wish him all the best and hope he can turn his life around.

Re: Brendan Fevola

There is a great Fev chant already emanating from the back of section 68. If I heard right, it was...

Glory glory to Fevola
Glory glory to Fevola
Glory glory to Fevola
He ain't gonna drink no more

It's already starting to spread. It will be a mainstay soon. :thumbsu:

He's one of the few blokes that's worth the admission price alone.

Re: Brendan Fevola

8 goals and 40 possessions between Fev and Brown is a fairly ominous start to their partnership. Imagine if Fev had kicked straight.

That's what they were chanting? It didn't carry over to section 70, I could only tell that they were chanting something.

Also, goal of the year contender, which isn't bad for someone who was only kicking at 25% accuracy.

Re: Brendan Fevola

I'm a fairly harsh critic of Fev, but being at the ground, it is very hard not to get excited by big Fev. Yeah his accuracy was off, but geez, 10 scoring shots and an out of bounds on the full is a fantastic return and he really did not have a lot of trouble finding the pill. The sausage roll he got in the 4th brought the Gabba noise to 09 Elimination Final proportion. In that passage of play, he was rewaded for his effort after dropping tha mark, then scrubbing the kick once the ball hit the deck and then moments later doing the Socceroos proud.

At the ground, you could really sense the crowd getting excited whenever he was in a contest...you gotta love that. There will be a lot of  for the Fev at the Gabba, no doubt I will be a convert.

Stutter starting Fev finally becomes a true Lion
PHIL LUTTON
March 28, 2010 - 12:06AM

It took about 20 seconds, give or take a few strokes on the Gabba clock, for the new Brisbane forward to dash out from the pack and wrap his mitts around the Sherrin for the first time. He thumped it across the face.

As the evening rolled on, they (Fev and the crowd) warmed to each other and by the end, as Fevola fist-pumped to his new supporters and Brisbane began a late rout in their 16-18-114 to 12-10-82 win, past transgressions were tossed aside and the seeds sown for a beautiful friendship. Ahhhh….

In the end, Fev wasn’t the messiah, nor was he a very naughty boy. Three goals, seven behinds wasn’t brilliant but it wasn’t terrible.

Re: Brendan Fevola

This might sound a bit stupid but I thought Fev looked (and played) really nervous tonight.

I mean, it must have been some kind of worry to him whether (or not) the supporters of his new club would warm to him, or give him a hard time by pouncing on his every mistake, or worse still, be just plain indifferent to him.

I think as the night wore on, the crowd and Fev warmed to each other.

The "miracle" soccer goal (after he initially stuffed up an easy chest mark) did his cause a power of good.

Anyway, he worked hard, had plenty of marks and shots at goal (most of which were on acute angles and from near or outside the 50) and ended up with 3.7 and one OOB on the full.

Most importantly, I thought his body language was really good...and he held himself well in check when he got a couple of dodgy calls from the umps.

Reckon the best of Fev is yet to come:thumbsu::)
