, as he is truly competitive in the air,

Nah, he really isn't.

Not arguable that he kicks the footy as well as any player in the comp, but he is a positionless, fairly cheap footballer. Can't actually play as a defender (standing around by yourself in the back 50 isn't defending ____ all), can't play in the middle and doesn't play forward. That you have even mentioned Clement in this thread, who is in the top few defenders I have seen play football, puzzles me greatly.

He is good at his job, but his job is bullshit easy.

Look, as a Collingwood fan, I like Clement as much as anyone, but at Goddard's age, Clement wasn't much of anything.

When he arrived at Collingwood, he was a passable mid-sized forward, and that was about it. He LEARNED to become the level of defender that he eventually became, but what he brought with him was a relatively good footy brain and a terrific kick. Goddard possesses both of these things, and is obviously quite talented, which is why I believe that he COULD be an excellent defender if he applies himself to it.

You're being overly harsh on him anyway. All I said was that he has the tools to develop into a quality defender, and you disagree, but it's a difference of opinion.

Was definitely not a waste of a #1 pick especially considering the talent lingering around that year. I think he is a true midfielder/utility type. Pace isn't his strength, but if you get him in space he will nail the target. Now I think about it, he sort of reminds of Gibbs a bit in a number of superficial ways. Most clubs would give up anywhere from pick 6 upwards for him if his body seems alright.

One of the best kicks in the AFL, and possibly the best going around at playing that loose "3rd man up" role in defense, as he is truly competitive in the air, and uses the ball terrifically.

Don't know that he's a midfielder, but he could definitely still develop into either a gun CHB or medium defender ala James Clement. I wouldn't bring him to Collingwood, as our limited need for him wouldn't justify spending what he'd cost, but he's certainly a terrific player.

A mate of mine who's a Saints support thinks the same, could become a medium tall CHB / third tall in defence ala a very skilled one with unning ability.

He also thinks he will end up at Carlton as one he supported them, two they need keys backs and three the Saints could very well clean out several players and draft heavily in 2008 before the Gold Coast impact the draft. If there's a year to draft players for picks its the next couple of years.

dont rate goddard that highly.

he's a good player, no doubt. nothing more though.

whats the point of being an outside player if your realllllllllllllllllllllly slow. he's a good kick of the footy, thats about it.

if carlton ever wanted to miss out on their priority pick any year in recent times, it was that year.

He can't defend, vinny. He can't defend because he sucks in a contest and he runs like a crab. St Kilda knows this. I challenge anyone to name me one forward he has played on, in a proper defensive role, and performed well over the course of a whole game. Nathan Brown is 19 and I can name every opponent he has had. Thursfield is 21 and plays on the best. Firrito is 23 and has played on all of them and beat them all at one stage or another. Etc etc.

Goddard will never be a quality defender. Ever.

Have to agree with you on this one. He isn't a key position player, no way. Very very good disposal by foot but in a contest, not that great. Not sure why Lyon keeps using him in defensive roles. Foot skills like he has shouldn't be used in the roles he's playing at the moment. Use him like the Pies use Shaw or the Dogs use Gilbee, he's most effective that way.

I would very much love him to be at the Blues, very versatile, could play forward and has very effective disposal which is what our team could benefit from greatly. I wouldn't give up Fisher and a late pick though for him as someone suggested. Probably a late first rounder maybe early second rounder, does carry baggage (knee reco) which brings down his value a little

Again, at his age, James Clement had never defended anyone either.

That's not to say that it's proof by omission, but just that it's ridiculous to say that at this still quite early stage of his career, when he was drafted as a midfielder (not a defender, like all of those you mentioned) that he can never make the transition.

I don't think he'll ever be as good as Clement was, but to suggest that it is absolutely impossible that he will ever make that transition is ludicrous. Joel Bowden might be a better example - He was always better at playing as a loose defender, but as he aged he became quite competent at defending his man as well, and ended up with a couple of AA selections.
