Geelong has today reluctantly accepted the resignation of assistant coach Brendan McCartney who will take up a position at Essendon.
The long serving McCartney has been named as the AFL’s assistant coach of the year by the AFL coaches association.
McCartney has been a fixture on the Cats coaching panel since coming to Skilled Stadium ahead of the 2000 season. In the ensuing 11 seasons McCartney has helped develop some of the best players in club history and been a key to two premiership campaigns.
The Geelong Cats today accepted assistant coach Brendan McCartney’s resignation as he moves on to take up a position at the Essendon Football Club.
McCartney, who had been a member of the Cats coaching panel since 2000, held the position of assistant coach and development academy director with the Cats and would be joining Essendon as a senior assistant coach to newly appointed senior coach James Hird.
I'm getting sick of this.
We were given promises of an extensive and meticulous search for a dream team coaching panel, and I was looking forward to the instalment of one of the most consummate coaching assemblies, under James Hird, ever.
Instead, we've lost Richardson, managed to pick up the bloke who ratted us out for salary cap breaches, and a rando from Geelong.
Give me Laidley and Thompson, then I'll be happy. At this stage, I'm not liking Hird's chances as an inexperienced coach with a profoundly unimpressive panel behind him.

Some people can never be pleased.
I'm glad Corcoran blew the whistle, we were cheating.
Shows how much you know outside of your own club.and a rando from Geelong.
Yep.With all due respect he is hardly a random. He is very highly regarded as a coach and Geelong will be frothing at the mouth for letting him slide.
That's an extremely baseless comment, but I appreciate the feedback from most nevertheless.
As for the clashing of egos, I think if we put Laidley and Thompson into niche coaching allotments, with Laidley contributing match day tactics and Thompson in a more part time role that he ostensibly desires, and Hird calling the majority of the shots whilst being mentored by both, then the dream team can work well.
At this stage, I'm still not sold on the proficiency of the coaching panel as it has been employed thus far. Time will tell as to how apt such appointments will be.
