The question has come up at several times in several threads so i'll pose it here for more heated discussion:

Is Brent Stanton a star in the making? Or is he just another good ordinary player? Or, if you severely dislike the guy, is he a spud?

No doubt all you bombers fans will post his rather impressive stats for this year to date, and no doubt all others will argue that he gets the loose ball, plays unaccountably and can't really hurt you when he's got it. So have at it then.

For mine, I reckon he's a solid contributor who'll never be an elite player, unless he adds some serious hardness to his game or improves his skills significantly. As it stands he gets a lot of the ball and uses it ok. But the same could be said of Woewodin in his woeful autumn years.

I think you have some valid points. I rate Stants but I think he does need a bit more grunt into his game.

FWIW, I don't really mind him playing the way he does because his disposal has improved and there are other players who get in the thick of it and dish it out to him. What I do like is that he finds a lot of space and just seems to run all day. Unaccountable? Maybe, lot's of players play off their man.

Every team has these type of players. The kid has only just turned 21, I think he is doing a pretty good job to this point but there is room for improvement.

Essendon supporters think he is the second coming of christ.
Some Essendon supporters.....Every team has it's share of supporters who rate their players higher than others.

He's the victorian version of Kane Cornes.

Not talented, not a matchwinner, a solid contributor tho. If he's around in 5-10 yrs time i'd slot him into the "Scott West" category.

BUTTTT.........

These stat sponge types are damn handy in your dream team.

I'm not sure why, doesn't seem like he will be anything more than a good solid player.

You forgot to add"some Essendon supporters" ;)
Good player but not a star. Will be a good player for us without ever reaching the level of star midfielder. One of those players who is better than the good average player but not in the elite group.

Ive noticed alot of Collingwood supporters posting and now starting threads regarding Stanton lately.

Is this another "turdy" obsession starting?

Thr truth be told, he does get a lot of uncontested ball but this also has to do with how much he runs. I would not be surprised at all if he is the bloke who covers most ground for us in games. He will never be an out and out superstar ala judd or kerr but will be a very very good player for us more in the adam simpson type who just gets the ball and always does his job. It is testament to him that he gets tagged almost every game and still does as well as he has.

spot on :thumbsu:

For mine, Stanton is a very good player that will be one of the btter midfielders going around for many years to come. However, I don't see him being a top 10 in the league type of player. He will win B&Fs and probably get an All-Australian jumper but I think that's where it ends with him. If his achievements mirrored Jason Johnson's, I wouldn't be disappointed.

It's amazing since Anzac Day the amount of Collingwood supporters (especially on BigFooty) who have suddenly become overwhelming experts of everything involved with the Essendon Football Club...

It was one win guys, keep trying...

i think someone already said this but reminds me of a young jason johnson. always going to get 100% from him every game, runs his hardest but just cant hurt sides enough with the ball. won't be a star but as long as he keeps up the way he's playing i'll be happy, especially since he went pick 13 in a draft that has produced nothing except for the first few.

I think he is overrated because of the players people are comparing him to. I would bet that if he played in a more elite team like Adelaide, West Coast and maybe even Port looking at current form, people wouldn't rate him so highly.

Nothing special, just you're run of the mill midfielder.
The phrase "dime a dozen" comes to mind

sums up most of your midfield then:p
just joking
hes great at getting the ball, and his disposal has improved remarkably, having said that he has no accountability and needs to get a defensive side to his game, i do like the adam simpson comparison, to get there he'll need to learn to track back

A lot of the poor disposal criticisms date from his previous seasons imho, he's been very reliable this year and Scott Lucas for one has certainly had a number of his goals this year come from a Stanton pass.

Don't think he'l ever be an elite, but he is very consistent and keeps improving at his game.

Could always find the ball, but used to be unreliable when he got it, then improved his kicking and got more distance and i reckon he's getting more dangerous. Today was the 1st time i can remember seeing him fly for a mark.
