Very, very few guys who can keep up with him will outmark him, and likewise very few who can outmark him can keep up with him. I don't think that's really clicked yet (took Goddard years as well)
It should take a very, very sorted defensive unit to keep rotating to keep the right match-ups on him.
 
It seems as though 2012 is the year for Deledio to stamp himself as an elite player in the AFL.

In the past when playing midfield he has copped the #1 tag, but with recruitment and development of Cotchin and Martin, Lids should be free and if he is not Cotchin and Martin will excell. This combined with the growing depth of our midfield including Foley who should get back near his best, Conca, the hardened bodies of Jackson and Tuck and the other developing youngsters should see Deledio becoma the powerful inside/outside midfielder he is so capable of.

Furthermore when playing forward in the past, Deledio has played as a secondary tall forward taking one of the oppositions key backs with him. Now with Riewoldt and Vickery as established KPF for the next 10 years as well as the 3rd tall of Miller/Post/Griffiths, Lids will more than likely take a weaker defender with him, who either does not have the size to compete in the air or the aerobic capactiy and speed to go with him on the lead.

totally agree all this talk about break out year and so on will not happen in the guts be cause he cant handle tags ,was never a mid and will never be one so go forward and kick 40 plus :thumbsu:
 
Hopefully this preseason he is use as an out and out midfielder! plenty of depth for running defenders! lets use our 3 midfield weapons together!

YES. Would love to see that. Remember when TW had him starting forward a couple of years back, he would generally pluck a couple on the lead having burned off his opponent, convert them into goals then get moved onto the ball before quarter time.

I think while he is clearly good enough to play in the midfield, he is so dangerous up forward that he really needs to be played there. Very quick, very strong hands, very accurate kick.... very difficult to match up on.


Also, on his contract status, he will not be leaving the club. He loves Richmond, and will be loyal until the end. However you can't blame a guy for allowing circumstances to ensure that he is getting paid market value or better over the next few years or so.

Great post, got me excited just reading it.
 
Guess who's gonna cop the #1 tag; week in week out? Deledio. A few teams let him loose in the first quarter when he was playing in the midfield and he got about 9 or 10 possessions 3/4s into the quarter. No team will tag Cotchin because 7/10 times he's still gonna get the ball whether you niggle him or not.

Ellis. You better release the Lids (you see what I did there?), so he can play up forward and win a Brownlow.

Brett has all the signs of a classic wingman in the Keith Greig & Robbie Flower mould. He will never be an inside player and nor do we want him playing inside. We have enough of those now. Brett should be getting 20-30 possies a week running off others and delivering 20-30 possies to advantage inside 50 (or thereabouts) every game. He should also be looking at 1-2 goals per game.

He is a beautiful player to watch with silky skills and I look forward to the coming years having Brett feed off the beautiful inside work from TC & DM.

Exactly. If Deledio and Cotchin play in the same midfield Deledio will cop the tag every time. Why?
Because a) it can be done, Cotchin isn't as taggable
b) Deledio has more "hurt factor" with his extra pace and longer kicking
c) Deledio plays more of an outside role than Cotch.

This is good for Cotch, not so good for Deledio. I still reckon he'd be better on the wing/hff, where he's less likely to cop a hard tag. There wouldn't be many defenders who could match him for pace, strength and hands both above his head and below his knees. Too mobile for the big defenders, too strong overhead for the smalls.

Could be a 20 possesion 2 goal a game HFF.

Never be in that mold at all, those two were elite in there position and glided over the ground effortlessly. Lids is not a glider and has even lost his explosive pace from his junior days. Last year i saw his gut running develop more but he still dawdled between plays but it is getting a lot better.
He will be played all over the ground up until he retires but i still see him as a damaging pinch hit forward like his junior days.
 
i have always seen deledio doing the goddard role.hf,hb and mid.keep developing mids and lids will be that great utility.st.kilda nearly won a premiership doing it and goddard was rated the best player in the leauge playing that role.having said that i can also see him playing that mid forward role that brown played for us before he broke his leg.sigh,i still have the picture in the paper of richo and brown as batman and robin,we were third i think before that leg injury.lids has the ability to kick from outside the arc,is a great mark,fast and will bring others into the game in the forward line.
 
As long as Lids plays out the rest of his career at Richmond, he will be a weapon where ever he plays. He`s a great utility player especially now that our list is getting stronger.
 
the more cotchin and martin develop. and the more they push eachother to be better, the better lids will be. he has had no competition for most talented or most valubale at the club since he arrived. competition promotes success.

lids could very well still end up better than martin or cotchin.
