On the Kangaroos website it writes we have just snared Brian Royal as assistant coach. This is fantastic news as I saw him as a guest on Foxtel and his knowledge of the game is second to none. He's very much for developing the youngsters much like Laid's and I reckon this a coup for the club.

You are right, that is great news. I rated him as the best assistant coach in the AFL when he was at the doggies, but took the obvious backwards step of going to Melbourne. He is worthy of being a senior coach really, so to have him as an assistant is an absolute bargain!!

from kangaroosfc.com.au:

Brian Royal Fact-file:

As a player

Senior Games: 199 with Bulldogs (1983-1993)
Goals: 299
All-Australian: 1986
Other honours: represented Victoria eight times, Bulldogs best-and-fairest 1983

As a coach:

Senior coach Leongatha – 1994-1995
Premiers 1995

Assistant Coach Western Bulldogs – 1996-1999
Preliminary Finalists 1997, 1998

Assistant Coach Melbourne – 2000-2003
AFL Grand Final 2000

I don't know enough about him as a coach to have an opinion here. Is he a good tactician? He sure looks like someone who can be good hands on with someone like Harro and other young midfielders, but gotta remember that he replaces Pyman who played a major role in the box and was a good tactical advisor to Laids.

I'd also be interested to know why was Royal always knocked back from all the senior jobs he applied for? What was it that put clubs off?

You're right about Pyman and he will be missed. I don't know why Choco has always been the bridesmaid but after hearing him impress on Foxtel the very next day people who know a lot about the game ( and also Mike Sheahan ) were big wraps on him and how his a ready made senior coach.

He always seems like a smart bloke in interviews - I'm also flummoxed as to why he's never got a senior position he's applied for.

I like the sound of that, but I'd hope that he could do for the Roos what he did for Leongatha.

He's very unlucky not to have snared a senior coaching position though.

Great news for many reasons - not least because it shows how much confidence Laidley has in himself. There aren't many coaches with only a year in the top job who'd want an assistant with Royal's credentials - most of them seem to go for newly-retired players with limited coaching experience, who aren't a threat. Looking forward to seeing what this coaching team can do.

The following is probably rubbish, but:

I reckon signing Royal is a sign that Laidley has faith in his own ability our list and our immediate playing future. It is quite rare that a very new coach will hire a bloke with great credentials a good rep and senior coaching aspirations.

Last year he took on a few blokes that were never going to be senior coaches, and my feeling at the time was that maybe subconsiously he wanted to have blokes that could not be seen as a threat to his job.

Does that sound stupid?

BASTARD!!!!

:D

I'm not sure there's any particular reason why he's missed out before. Denis Pagan was consistently overlooked for senior coaching jobs for the best part of a decade....

Would have loved him at Geelong.

Seems a strange decision given he'd be more likely to get a senior gig if he came to Geelong (Thompson will go before Laidley), but best of luck to him. He is an excellent assistant who will do plenty of good for North.

A school of thought as to why Royal has missed out on senior jobs is because he has never been part of a premiership team (either as a player or as an asst coach). I credit Choco with a lot of the reasons why the Bulldogs finish 3rd in 97 & 98. As soon as Choco left, the downhill slide began:(

All the best for the Kangaroos & Brian Royal.

You would think that if Thompson got the sack, North would not step in Royal's way if he applied for and won the Geelong coaching job.

It wouldn't be such a bad result for Geelong either - Royal gets more experience from another coach in another environment and he would have a clean slate in taking over the Cats as an outsider rather than an insider (if he took up an assistants role with Thompson).

I think Laidley is set for the next couple of years.

It would take an extraordinary turn of events (of Carey like proportions) for JYD to get pushed out by Royal.

It's plausible, but I think JYD is a strong enough bloke to handle any "challenge" from his assistants. I reckon that for us, it was more of an issue of getting cheaper options for our assistants.

If I remember correctly, the Roos were considering giving Wayne Brittain an assistants role, but perhaps money was the issue. But then again, he probably also knew that Frawley was on borrowed time - so why not get yourself set at Punt Road?

Would've (and should've) been coaching Melbourne at the end of last season, except for Daniher's contract. A really good coup for the club.

Did Steve Malaxos end up being interviewed at all, I remember a thread a couple of weeks ago saying he was close to signing as assistant coach?

That was me who said that Malaxos was coming to the Roos.

It stated in the West Australian that it was a done deal!

Obviously Laidley feels Royal has better credentials.

GO CHOCCO
