Other then fagen and mont. How many more coaches do we need to fill out the coaching roster and who would be the dream team? Assuming fagen and mont. are in ( heres hoping).

Chasing shadows a bit here. Two of our most senior players just retired. We're about to draft some 18yos. The math checks out right there.

If we lose any more, well, that's just more to the point. The big secret didn't come out in a media interview of a prospective candidate for a coaching role.

Seeking new opportunities or not, basically sacking one of your coaches on the eve of a finals campaign, doesn't sit right for me. The Bulldogs seem to be the model we should almost try to be like. Why would they kick Monty out when they did? It says a bit to me...

They mutually came to an agreement for Monty to depart. I wouldn't think that is a sacking.

What role did Monty have at the Dogs anyway? Senior assistant?

Come on now... "mutually agreed" = leave or we'll make you leave. Fine, I want to go anyway.

Clubs don't "mutually agree" for a coach to leave just as they're embarking on finals. Not unless there's issues.

Also.... a close friend of mine is mates with a coach/trainer at the Bulldogs.... They were talking about Monty last night and the word is that Monty is a super negative character.
I wouldn't worry too much about this.

1. Monty missed out on Beveridge's job by a whisker after being there first. So, Monty has spent two years under the guy who narrowly took what he thought was his job. That'll sting a little.

2. From what I understand, Bevo is a machine and had taken a lot of the responsibility upon himself. He's nailed it, so no arguments, but presumably Monty has less to do. Proud bloke probably doesn't like that.

3. Bevo just walked the Dogs into a GF. That makes Bevo the Messiah, and anyone at WB not 100% Team Bevo wouldn't be getting much sympathy down there - hence your mate's comments.

4. If Fagan is the 'coach manager' we're led to believe he is, he NEEDS 'can do' assistants like Monty.

5. Monty is a dozen years younger than Fagan, so there's opportunity to inherit the kingdom.

He's a competitive bloke. Nothing of what has been reported concerns me at all.

Here's the issue .... All clubs are encouraged by the AFLCA to notify their assistant coaches of their contract status by August 1, giving them the green light to explore opportunities if they are not guaranteed a new deal..Monty received no guarantee from the Bulldogs that he would be offered a contract beyond 2016 and started to explore opportunities... interviewed by Geelong ( Caracella's position) Richmond and Brisbane..(you mentioned, that we were into football personal weeks ago.)...Beveridge has issues with anyone in his department talking with other clubs ( e.g Lin Jong tour of Collingwood Beveridge although supportive wasn't happy and threatened playing him in reserves) when your senior assistant does it you make an example of them...

I just don't trust Barker to rein in our "wag the dog" playing list. Just can't take that risk.

What the same Barker who after taking over Malthouse immediately dropped players like Yarran for being 5 mins late for training. He dropped players constantly and often at his own peril to set some standards back at the Blues. He won't be a push over if he gets the job. You don't go on to level 4 coaching without lacking the understanding of your actions as a coach.

Fagan or Barker either would be a good appointment.

Fair call

I have changed my view..I want the best available..Someone who is a great tactican and communicator..don't care if it's Fagan, Barker or Montgomery

Peter Gordon on open mike gives an insight into why Beveridge got the job ... obviously ahead of Montgomery .... he basically said and I agree with him that the tactical aspect in a coach is overplayed and that Beveridge showed he had man management skills and that got him the job! ... we need man management skills!! I feel that the dogs are all the interview panel we need in terms of ruling out Montgomery .. they had him just as Swans have Dew ... difference is Dogs let Montgomery go before finals despite his so called expert tactical ability!

I do think that in the modern day with so many more coaches and specialised staff, the senior coach does need to be more about man management rather than purely footy brain. For the most part, the line coaches work with their respective groups to get the game plan executed. Senior coach needs to ensure the line coaches are doing what is needed. Review previous game, select team for current week, talk tactics and match ups, training loads and focus and working with fitness recover staff so the team goes into current week prepared. Make sure everyone has their jobs on game day and over see the game and make changes adjustments where needed. If you think about this way, then man management and communication needs to be very very important. I think being able to identify the talent in the playing group and bringing out the best in them by being inspiring is probably another part, but again, is communication dependent.

Think you can have a more management based person at the top with more tactical people underneath.

Greg Davis saying that Brett Montgomery was highly impressive in his interview although he still thinks Chris Fagan is favorite. Montgomery for a senior assistants role would be great.

Aparrently Leppa blew everyone away at his interview!?

I also think with the stage our squad is at; tactics is nowhere near as important as development. Although the Bulldogs have shown what a young, well coached team can do.

Sorry guys but it sounds like I am tough on Montgomery but something tells me he is not the right fit for our club ... I cannot help but think that he was senior assistant at the dogs under MacCartney and the club was in crisis big time ... he was the Assistant to that crisis .. that is all I will say on this matter .. happy to be guided by Luke Darcy who swayed the dogs away from Montgomery to Beveridge

It seems nearly everyone is impressive in their interview these days. I am not saying that it isn't valid, just that I think the general level of professionalism from the aspiring coaches means they are probably well prepared and well drilled on how to approach the interview. Really, if you weren't impressive in the interview, it would really just rule you out of being in any sort of consideration based on your experience and body of work. The interview is akin to the swimsuit round of Miss Universe - exciting and glamorous, but shouldn't be winning the prize on its own. (Disclaimer: I know nothing about how Miss Universe voting works and even less about how the Brisbane Lions will decide on a coach.)

WTF??? Of COURSE the swimsuit round decides who wins Miss Universe!! What else could they possibly use?? Every single contestant wants world peace, an end to poverty and cuddles for all the children. It's really only their choice of colour in a bikini that puts one ahead of the other.

That being said, I'm on the Barker train - a bloke who still goes overseas with a senior coach interview on the cards has some guts and determination. Yeah, we aren't the job in a lifetime and thus, whilst we shouldn't think he doesn't care - it could also display a level of professionalism and understanding that sooner or later he'll get a gig - if not here, then somewhere else.

Kinda like how the Miss Universe winner struts her stuff somehow better than everyone else in the swimsuit round.....

The big question is what are Fagan's legs like?

I think all it shows he pre-arranged the trip.

Montgomery had to be notified by August 1.He had higher ambitions and they were never going to be satisfied at the Bulldogs for more than a year or two.He has behaved impeccably.

Grain of salt,...have every faith that Noble & Co will assemble the best team...It was well established prior to selecting the coach for the Dogs that Peter Gordon & Montgomery didn't get on..Stems from how the club handled McCartney and Griffen leaving the club....Not sure the tactical aspect of a coach is overplayed..Beveridge was employed as that at Hawthorn and was one of the major reasons getting him to the Dogs..His appointment made Montgomery surplus, Montgomery had a contract till the end of 2016..From all reports Montgomery has very good management skills both at his time at Carlton and Bulldogs..
Montys interview with us went extremely well with us on Tuesday..
