I wouldn't watch females sport either (barring Olympics) and actually most people I know wouldn't as well at this time, but I'm sure there will be some group that would love to watch it. Also the skill levels and fitness will increase as it gets more exposure and more people participate in these sports as they get more mainstream (like Tennis). Will take a generation or two to get to a decent standard of play so hopefully the AFL will keep investing into it for that long.

If your definition of a successful sporting contest is one that makes a heap of money and draws massive crowds and ratings, then chances are women's team sport won't be considered successful. Arguably though, the same holds for just about every sport at the Olympics, at least from an Australian context.

Women are entitled to a pathway to an elite level of sport. If girls can see the pathway, they will be more likely to stay with the sport. And the more people playing the game, the better off the code will be.

Is ther a truely successful women's league for anything around the world? I mean the netball does ok. I understand that it's excellent for the game and everything but how many of you would actually pay to go and watch a women's AFL side? I honestly wouldn't.

I'd pay and go.

agree, which is why I think the AFL should keep funding the female AFL even if initial support isn't as strong as they hope for (although I suspect the first season or two will rate well it will most likely drop off as the novelty wears off). Olympics is different as it has been ingrained over many many generations that there is a clear pathway for females. AFL needs to hold steady and don't give up, there is support for the game out there they just need to give it a little nudge to get the ball rolling.

Womens tennis and possibly womens golf are the only female sports that I believe are be financially viable.

Womens football is massive in the USA at a junior and collegiate level, but struggles at the pro level. The WNBA is propped up financially by the NBA.

I guess a google search would answer the question.

Yeah I had a quick Google and as far as major women's leagues goes the tennis and golf are the only ones turning a profit. I understand right now just in general political & social climates it's very positive for women's sport so I see the merits in trying to establish it. But in my googling I did find some interesting points. The women's major soccer league in America is on its third establishment since 1999. It's been disbanded and re put together three times and that's coming off the back of women's USA soccer team winning the World Cup so I guess you could say support was high. It's been 15 years and that still hasn't really established itself. I'd just hate for it to be popular for a the first year or two and then fizzle out into nothing. That's my only worry. Because I couldn't find an example of any recent women's professional sports actually taking off. Only seemed to me that the ones which are successful (looking at it commercially) are the ones that have been engrained in society for a long long time. E.g. Tennis, golf. It's interesting I look forward to see how the AFL implements it. I did watch the Melbourne v doggies women's game I also found the talent gap from the best player to just the tenth best player to be pretty significant. Be interesting how many teams they start off with because I can't see the talent being there right now for more than 4 teams. I hope it takes off just a lot of ifs and buts, with the recent expansions still not established and the basket case that is teams like ourselves, Carlton, Gold Coast and such I'd hate for the AFL to stretch themselves too thin. Are we still trying to get ourselves a footing over seas? The NZ & China talk has seemed to have dryed up. Seems to be some busy years for the AFL coming up.

Women are the highest paid in that Neanderthal "sport" of UFC.
I believe this is because the mostly male audience likes watching women snot each other.

Maybe the AFL should 'Bring back the biff'.

Because men are SO much more important than women.

I think you're missing his point either accidentally or deliberately in order to draw a bow to sexism.

i am all for the concept will benefit australian rules football overall re. participation, spectators, sponsors. even if market forces dictate that long term it is not financially viable as a stand alone competition. would like to see it stuck with as a competition with support from the AFL, with the lions providing some financial/infrastructure help. ie. financial AFL 80% lions 20%.

Implying that a man has features enough to represent a woman and play in a woman's league is pretty crass.

Your posting is pretty terrible and this is just another good example of it.

I can tell you're fun at parties. Made me laugh, chill out mate.

I haven't seen any of the women's aussie rules games so am wondering if they play using the same rules and/or what tactics they use? Am thinking if they play a lot like the VFL used to back in the 80's then according to many many posts on the main board there should be a groundswell of support for them because it was 'so much more entertaining' back then.

So if you were to compare current Womens' AFL type games to an era in the men's version ... where would they currently sit?

Here's a potential hidden benefit: In 10-12 years one of these women will be savvy enough to get a regular gig on the The Footy Show (assuming it's not cancelled first). Might even make it worth watching, and might help some of the idiots on that programme pull their heads in a bit. The "they haven't played the game" excuse will no longer be a valid one.

I hope women's footy at a professional level can eventually get its chance. Only netball, of the team sports has really been able to get to the point where it is given anything close to the coverage men get. Even then, it is only barely on the radar.

Get the comp up and running and give it a few years.

Added bonus: Lions AFL team training at a new state of the art facility alongside the Lions women's team, sharing a joke around the club, chatting on side by side massage tables, attending club events together, romance grows, relationship ensues. Twenty years later, father/son and mother/daughter picks that are genetically perfect for AFL.

Though interestingly on the women/girls side they are pushing for females to coach, which is strange since some of them have never played a game of football. Comments like "I have coached netball, it is just the same.", leave me shaking my head because I wouldnt dream of trying to coach a netball team.

As someone who's played both, the concepts are actually surprisingly similar at a basic level.

Either lighten up or Take your dry sense of humor and move it elsewhere.

Hopefully sooner - I would love to see Sam Newman take his foot out of his mouth to shove the other one in.
