If Lyon really used it as a motivator why tell him prior to the trade period? It's pretty obvious the message was 'you better put yourself up for trade, because you'll struggle to get a game here'.

Yep, timing certainly says that, but it would be culmination of actions, buy-in and expectations over the season

Yep, definitely not best timing, but we don't know what was going on throughout season regards buy-in, expectations and efforts etc
I think it's the perfect timing if your aim is to move someone on. This notion of Broughton being thrown a challenge by Lyon and not 'buying in' is nonsensical. When the coach says prior to final list lodging "you'll be playing WAFL next year" the message is pretty clear.

Telling any player "you'll be playing WAFL all year" is ******* shithouse managing. Why say something so shitty to Broughton. You wouldn't say it to Walters even Jack Anthony so why say it to Broughts. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
But how do you know this is what he said? It sounds more like a Managers spin to me.

Best management is about working out what makes each person tick and picking the motivation or stick appropriate to the person and situation, the most likely to achieve the desired outcome, there is no one best management practice for getting people to buy-in or perform at their best. Probably this is just the end result of a whole season's worth of interactions with Broughton about expectations, buy-in and actions.

PS: I wonder who the player was that it is rumoured complained to the AFLPA about holiday fitness expectations and monitoring.

Perhaps Ross realises you catch far more flies with shit.

Lyon is polarising. His approach has worked with some and not with others. Most of the players seem to genuinely love having him at Freo but there are going to be some casualties along the way. If we had of gotten a decent deal for Broughton I could have swallowed it, but pick 37 is just junk.

Yep, this was clearly Broughton's Walters/Pearce moment and he chose to walk rather than do the (sorry) Hard Yakka. Nothing to see here folks just a coach sending a challenge and a player thinking he didn't deserve to be challenged. Ross doesn't let up. He will hammer you into to a grand final.

How do we know this was said though. Have to have evidence. BF boards are not known for fact checked assertions.
For what it's worth if it was even just pick 30 and not 37 I reckon it wouldn't sting so much.

Have a listen, there's no longer doubt about it.

I think Ghost Pig nailed it.

Erm, nah. It was never about him being challenged to improve next year, it was about moving him on.

I think that a lot on here are under-rating what we actually received for Greg. Fact is, if we didn't trade him our third pick would be at 60. 5 years ago this middle of second round pick would be 28 or so.

From a list management point of view we have done really well. We turned a last round rookie pick into a second round national draft pick and we lost a player that we won 7 of 9 games without this year. Lee Spurr might not be an upgrade of Broughton, but he is definitely a serviceable option that is probably only on a rookie wage. As far as the team is concerned, we will not be disadvantaged enough that it loses us games and we have gained a pick that will be our second best pick in this draft.

There aren't too many pleasing ways to get new draft picks in the eyes of the fans and I much prefer this way than becoming a soulless trash heap of a club that isn't interested in winning games,

Seriously, all of you would think he's the missing link or something. Never heard such drivel and concern over a non match-winner.

How many of you actually understand that some players just don't cut it or don't want to cut it under a new coach or game plan? I'll take finals appearances and a tilt at a GF any day over whining couch coaches and list managers..

Take a look at Brent Moloney, he was the Demons' B&F in 2011, next a discard.

Just saw the news on the AFL website, what a ****ing joke. There better be another part to that deal that is still being finalised, otherwise that is a ****ing joke.

Everyone whinging 37 is junk...Broughton was a late Rookie pick!
There will be plenty of talent available so it's about making the right choice and ensuring we have a better balanced list i.e less flankers.
More than half our best 22 was taken after the first two rds of the National Draft so let's not get too carried away.
Just need to draft well and everyone will be happy but it's definately not the end of world.
