Interesting....
Umpire with mates?I imagine its a case of a umpire telling his mates who will get the three votes in a game, I wonder how it all unravelled. Also I 100% believe this happens way more than we think.
If he is found guilty it would be an unprecedented and disgraceful situation. At least for the odd idiot player who was found guilty it was only a game or thereabouts.10 matches ... bit hard to spin that as an inadvertent slip of a tipsy tongue. The "good bloke" defense is looking shaky at this point.
Surely the easiest way to stop this from happening again is to make the punishment so heavy, its not worth it for the umps. If you dont punish this guy, or give him a "suspended sentence" it will encourage others.
The easiest way to stop it is to get rid of this bullshit notion that sport exists for gambling. It doesn’t - it exists for community.
So you simply ban gambling on an event that’s already been run and won.
Agree with the premise but you can't stop gambling and you have to have laws stopping people from benefiting from inside information, if it exists. Otherwise you will wind up with match fixing. That being said I hope the betting companies and all their staff come to a bad end.
You absolutely can stop gambling, it’s regulated by government. They did it to overseas online casinos at the behest of the bookies, they can do it now.
The Brownlow is the biggest scam of a betting event in the world, you’re betting on a race that’s already been won. You don’t even need to fix it to score a s**t ton.
Saw the headline and just assumed there was finally an investigation into how Sam Draper polled 3 votes in round 1 2021 after 11 touches in the losing side.
24 hitouts, 5 tackles, 4 clearances in a 1 point loss. But hey, details.
Tom Mitchell had 39 (17 in the third quarter) and 5 tackles.
Dylan Moore 19 touches and 3 goals
McGrath 33 and 11 tackles.
Better details.
Not really. None of them are ruckmen are they? Drapes was very good in a side that was pipped at the death. Hardly a Robert Klomp moment.
Both gave out "tips" when they shouldn't haveNot the first time a bloke named Pell has “dogged the boys”
Draper wouldn't be best on in a VFL reserves game, bloke is a crab.It was a howler in my opinion.
Obviously having watched that game multiple times I still wouldn't have even considered him as one of Essendons top 5 players on the night. Let alone best player on the entire ground.
Interesting....
Swan takes more piss on social media than any other campaigner on the planetDane's gone full Trump.
Speaking of howlers, Draper's goal of the year where all he did was a failed half sidestep and then a brush off on Ballard (14kg lighter than Draper) and kicked a goal from 30-35m out pretty much straight in front. It was a howler in my opinion.

Reckon there were 15 to 20 better round nominees easily.
Add to that, that of Drapers 5 kicks and 5 handballs (10 in total), only 6 hit a target.Tom Mitchell had 39 (17 in the third quarter) and 5 tackles.

I'd have a few in front of Bolton, but as a neutral, if Drapers is what the afl thinks is the pinnicle the 2,000 goals kicked for the year, then it just shows yet another disconnect between them and the fans about the game.Surprised Bolton didn't win it tbh.
Having said that, umpires don't vote on it, so you can't blame them for GOTY howler.
It is very possible. Not necessarily sway the 3 votes but say 2 umpires gave a player 1 vote but another ump that wanted to swing the vote gave the player 3. Argy bargy in the umpires room and the final decision is that the player gets 2 votes as a compromise.Without knowledge of how the conversations/decision making process goes inside the umpires room it’s hard to say with certainty, but I’d be surprised if 1 could drastically sway the other 2 towards a decision. Pell in particular having such little experience at afl level would presumably have found it even tougher.
It’s a s**t situation but I think the calls for drastic changes to processes around the vote and who does it are reactive and opportunistic from media pushing an agenda.
I also feel for other umpires who don’t do this but are now to be faced with even more calls that they “cheat” and screw fans teams over

Alex Keath vs West Coast was better and didn't even win GOTW.Speaking of howlers, Draper's goal of the year where all he did was a failed half sidestep and then a brush off on Ballard (14kg lighter than Draper) and kicked a goal from 30-35m out pretty much straight in front.

exactly Brownlow predictor is mainly educated guesswork and probably about 85% accurateYou absolutely can stop gambling, it’s regulated by government. They did it to overseas online casinos at the behest of the bookies, they can do it now.
