Bruce is great :thumbsu:

I don't think there would be a more knowledgable caller in the game than Bruce.

Just knows every stat, every result.. you can tell he actually spends a lot of time preparing.

BT, JB etc. are all extremely entertaining but you know they just rock up on the day and call.

Having called a few local/TAC footy games myself, I guess it's just something I appreciate, notice.

I still listen to Triple M first and foremost but I can appreciate that Bruce is a bloody good caller.

Can't stand Gerard Whateley, good knowledge of the game yes, but his voice shits me to tears.

Watching last nights game you can see why the Bruce batting for the same team rumours have been around for years. He just gays up the coverage so much that you'd think you're watching a Mardi Gra.
Last night Schofields chase of Johnson was described as "Revealing"
Then a few minutes later he stepped out of the closet and described Nic Nac Paddywhack as "Exotic"

I was watching a replay of a game between Hawthorn and Adelaide in the early 1990s at Football Park, and Bruce was one of the commentators.

The presentation was fantastic. None of this over-done pre-match build up. They started showing the teams run onto the ground, showed the team placings, got on with the game, and commentors just called the game.

Bruce's call was incredibly good, because all he did was call the game. None of these emphasised call of "bee-hyoo-teeee!!!" or "spe------sall!!!". Bruce used to be such a good commentator but fell victim to the network wankfest we see these days.

Dennis "Gosh, I'm so amusing" Cometti annoys me as well.

There are some players in the call who obviously warrant 'special attention'. He is getting older and the inner Liberace will come out. But it's not only that, to me he is just a tired old chestnut

I have no idea why Bruce puts on a deep voice when things are exciting, I cringe every time. Another couple of things that grind my gears are when he says "he'll kick a goal, he does" and why does he need constant approval from his co-commentators by finishing everything with a question?

Think the 5 years that Bruce didn't call the games really stuffed him...

I'm one of Bruce's biggest fans but you are spot on the money.

There's not doubt that vintage calling from Bruce between 1990-2001 sh!ts all over the Bruce call of 2007-2011.

His style has changed.

He's become "syrupy".

He doesn't call with the same tightness and discipline as he did when he was in his prime.

He covered a lot of sport during the five years Ch7 didn't have the rights, however his style changed during then and it hasn't been the same since.

Listen to his work on old video's/dvd's or next time he's calling a game on Footy Flashbacks, you'll notice the difference.

As one of his biggest fans it's a real shame that he style has changed.

Can you further explain this?

I, like you, have always been a big fan of Bruce. He and Commetti are the voices of footy for our generation.

Obviously on the decline. But he always seems to have good chemistry with the co-commentators and the special comment guys.

I'ld stick with him and Denis over any other tandem.

The game has passed him by, time to hang up the boots methinks. Genuinely clueless when it comes to footy, as evidenced by his continual fence sitting and rhetorical questions. "You'd think he may be able to kick this, wouldn't you?" Can't commit to a statement, and when he does it's farcical.

In tonights game, literally 1 minute into the game, Jacobs takes a mark-his first possession, Bruce "Gee he's already been very good, I know it sounds a little silly..." No Bruce it sounds ****ing ******ed.

Yes, you get the feeling that he's become a bit of a caricature of himself, don't you? He was a good commentator in his day, Bruce, but they get irritating, don't they, the rhetorical questions? And you get the feeling don't you that there's a weird sexual vibe about the way he talks about certain players, isn't there?

Argh - I used to really like him, but once I started noticing his more irritating commentary habits (as illustrated above) I couldn't ignore them; as someone else pointed out above, the way he draaaaags ooouuut certain woooords for eeeeem-phasis is overdone as well. I counted about 15 rhetorical questions in a quarter recently. And what is it with commentators constantly phrasing things like: "They're playing well, Geelong" or "He's a great kick, [player X]" instead of the simpler, "Geelong's playing well" or "player X is a great kick." Bruce has a bad habit of doing this, but he's not the only one by any stretch.

Oh god.. A few weeks ago on Friday night footy commentated by Brucey he said something like this: (Not sure which player it was but anyway) I know those legs.. (Long, extremely awkward silence).. I see him down at the beach I live near every morning.
Now now Bruce.. No need to stalk footy players. I think it's been that way since he called Cyril delicious. hahaha and how do you know that Bruce? Something you want to share about your relationship with Cyril Rioli?

He was shocking at the Beijing Olympics although I guess he'll be back again for London unfortunately.

You're in luck. Channel 9 and Fox Sports have the rights. So we'll have Eddie and god I hope our friend Dwayne Russell will be there too!!

Calling the soccer: "Shorts it...Shorts it...Shorts it...Shorts it"
Calling the javelin: "THATS A SPEAR" "Gives it some sky"

Just imagine it, it would be as good as it gets!

Will always be a fanof Bruce but i agree his well past his best calling the AFL.

Will be sorely missed at the London Olympics though. Not a good swimming commentator; but brilliant at athletics. Most Australian commentators covering Olympic or Commonwealth events are from football backgrounds; and usually don't have that rigorous passion or knowledge for the actual sport they are covering as they might for AFL or Rugby League. Bruce is the exception; he's a far better athletics commentator than he is for AFL i think.

You'll learn a lot about the athletes from his big book of random stats and stories.
