Past Bryce Gibbs

Once a perception sets in, it can be hard for us to rid ourselves of it.
Bryce has copped some flak at times and for good reasons but who hasn't at times through their career?

You couldn't have possibly watched the game vs Port and declared him being soft.......You just couldn't.
Gibbs has a role to play and he's been terrific more often than not, but watch out for the next quiet game you have Bryce........We're watching you :)

I don't think it is a perception setting in, it is more of a pure frustration.

He has played some great footy in the past but then dropped off the intensity. This past month he is back at it hard and there wouldn't be a Blues fan in the country who doesn't want more of it.

If he keeps this up, it is one less position that the list management team have to worry about too.

Some things do become perceptions but I guess they become that way for a reason also.

i.e. Selwood would never be considered soft but he is perceived as a ducking cheat (Did you like that? :))
All Selwood has to do, is to half-duck in any game and the boos will come, for him.

If Gibbs has some 'bads' then so be it but if he keeps up the 'goods', we should applaud him for that too.

If Gibbs had been played in the middle and forward of the ball in his first 100 games he would now be considered one of the greats of the game.

Sadly, coaches that thought they knew better burned most of his first 125 games on the half back flank.

An extra 100 games in the middle would have shown the AFL world what Gibbs was capable of at this level.

But he was wasted in a position he should never play in.

Fair comment.

Even at the top of his game, it appears Gibbs still has his detractors. Bryce has always been a class player, but like most of our good players, he's spent a lot of time in a poorly performed side. But for whatever reason, he's copped more flack than most...
I posted a while ago (whilst defending him AGAIN) , that the better we become as a team, the better Gibbs will be, to the point where he will become a dominant player, not just for us, but within the comp.
Personally, I'm not surprised by his current form, if you know anything about footy, you would've seen this coming.
If we win a few more games this year, he'll give the Brownlow a real shake.
Gibbs is all class, and he's finally part of a team that has given him the confidence and freedom to show what he's made of...

If Murphy and Gibbs were drafted to a team like Geelong or Hawthorn, im confident they'd be part of the few ELITE mids in the comp

Nah, his best game was against Geelong in '14. Today he was close though.

How can a bloke who looked like he cruised around in 2nd gear for most of his career turn into this weapon we are seeing? He was relentless in giving up the ball on the inside and ran his guts out (literally) on the outside. His decision making and quick thinking is at its best too.

He's playing like he has a point to prove and I am loving it. In contention for AA and Brownlow at the moment no doubt.

Simple. He chased Ed Curnow around all preseason. Learnt how to run.

At his best he really is the complete player. Tackles like a boss, inside work, outside run, kicks goals...

Even his post-match interviews are telling though. There's emotion in his voice and realness I can't recall noticing before, much less of the cliche robotic stuff.

Yep. He was on fire that night. Went head to head with Selwood and smashed him off the park.
Kicked 4 really classy goals.
We got robbed that night. Umpires FFS.

Interesting stats regarding Gibbs he actually playing better footy this year then his BnF year 2014.
2016 -2014 games played 10 -22 average disposals 27.5 - 24.8 DE 72.4% - 67.3%
contested possession 10.7 - 8.9 meters gained 380 - 367 goal assists 0.8 - 0.6
score involments 7.1 - 6.6. Average marks 4.6 - 4.1 Tackles 5.4 - 4.9 R50's 2.0 - 1.7 I50's 3.5 - 4.1
Intercept possession 2.6 - 2.3 Goals 11 - 18 AFL fantasy 112.5 - 101.1.
His up on pretty much every key stat. IMO Gibbs will trive under Bolton.

Gibbs is the sort of guy who can trot around at half rat power and still collect 25 neat touches...which I think he did rounds one and two.

It's always been intent that separates his meh from his best. Don't know what lit his fire this past month, but he's playing like the guy we always wanted him to be.

you have got to be on drugs

He has always been a jet.

Trouble was he was never challenged by his coaches early in his career. They let him play on a half back flank, a position which never challenged his real talent. He played well there and did the team thing and never once complained about not getting enough time in the midfield.

If he had an extra 100 games in the midfield and forward of centre early in his career, what we are seeing today, we would have been seeing it 4 or 5 years ago.

Gibbs is a classic example of how not to develop an elite talent.

Why does this myth that Gibbs played most of early career off the HBF persist?

What people need to remember is this bloke was tearing it up in the SANFL against adults as a 16 year old.

He was already being challenged as a child and meeting those challenges head on.

He gets to the AFL, gets picked number 1 and sent to the half back flank for 125 games.

Would you have played Chris Judd on a half back flank for his first 125 games?

Would you have played Dustin Martin on a half back flank for his first 125 games?

It beggars belief, but we did it.

now we're re-writing Carlton history again and overlooking the state of our team at the time Gibbs arrived - he was played back to help shore up a frail backline - not just for his schooling. Even the old "he was playing against men as a 16 year old" gets another run. Don't forget the 6 goals in a match goodie!
