It always seem to crop up. Last season the team showed the game plan stands up as long as the players execute. We lost to 3 teams in 3 weeks (Freo, Port and Hawks) by less than 30 points combined and had the lead in every game.

If it wasn't for some rookie errors we had those games in the bag and would have played finals.

The game plan works.

When spring comes everyone is looking over their shoulder for the Magpies!

It's just a shame that in the 2nd half of the season people are looking over their shoulder to see just how far we've fallen behind as we run out of puff o_O

True and undeniable.

Hopefully another year older, bolder and wiser we don't fall off quite so hard.

I'm not sure Buckley has mastered the art of building towards finals. We burst out of the gates and stumble over the line at the back of the pack.

I know I'll be hammered for this, but it's a poor decision.

Completely agree ...

... You will be hammered for that :p

A one year contract extension isn't going to make any difference to how long Buckley will / won't stay as coach.

It's just a (very expensive) way to keep the media off his back and not distracting him this year. What's wrong with giving him every chance to succeed?

Not a bad price to pay for Robbo not asking Bucks about his contract on AFL 360. In fact a bargain, if you look at it that way.
Actually Robbo desperately trying to get something to stick on Bucks and to see it masterfully deflected is the one of highlights on AFL 360.

The right decision.

It removes the risk of media speculation of Buckley's tenure derailing our season. Worst case scenario is we just terminate early and wear the costs (which we can afford), although it wouldn't surprise me if Buckley had have agreed to less stringent payout terms just to get the deal signed so that the season wouldn't be at risk.
Smart move by the club. Money we got, but you only get one chance at each season...
Well put.

Let's see how Richmond goes who still have to sign Dimma. KB has already started proceedings of white anting.

What's wrong with seeing how Buckley performs before giving him another extension at the club?

Oh wait.. I forget, we need to pay 500K+ to stop a few media articles that (rightfully and correctly) question whether Buckley is the BEST POSSIBLE senior coach for us. I'm glad not many people in here run businesses with how blase they are to potentially flushing over half a million down the toilet if things don't work with Buckley and we're forced to sack him early (then pay him out ala - James Hird)

One way of looking at it. The months of speculation followed by a knee jerk reaction of quickly getting a new coach in between seasons is not my thing either. And more damaging too. Players need to be focused on this years outcome, not on next years coach. See Carlton last year. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy if we don't show intent. As club, as coach and team that this year we focus on getting to the finals. And that is a 100% focus without any distractions.
This year to perform, next year as safe guard or caretaker role.
I can see Bucks just as easily stepping aside to another role within the club while the new coach takes over. And if he steps aside, it doesn't cost us a thing either. I doubt he will be waiting to be tapped on the shoulder so he can get a payout.

Nothing like Hird.

Smarter decision than most clubs make in my opinion. They backed him in with a clear caveat.

Finals are expected from the top down now. Buckley knows and the board has agreed that if he can't deliver his time is up.

This is totally fair enough.

I don't think there are caveats in there which is good because I don't think it's useful to paint yourself into a corner in order to appease the opposition or nincompoops in our club. If for some freak reason we sustained massive injuries to 5/10 best players then that's not really a baseline.

We see how we go with the players on call and judge it that way. But it is certainly the time to make a call, all things going okay.

I think a bunch of players have come over because they like Bucks, no doubt, but the time lag is caught up right now and we need to make an assessment at the end of the year which is reasonable.

Good decision by the club. Shuts down the media speculation that would have been rife through the 2016 season if it wasn't done, gives Buckley notice that there are clearly heightened expectations going into 2016, and returns the focus to the team and the game. Definitely a win-win.

Irrelevant to me Quicky......my point is our Club has wasted money on worse things like the Beach Hotel and settling Malthouse's final three years.

Like I said earlier I have no problem that part of membership money goes to Bucks if a pay out is necessary.

The truth is I would prefer it to go to bonuses because he holds up the Premiership Cup in the future.

The hotels fiasco is a reason we shouldn't feel too secure in our wealth and a good example of why we can't afford to be wasteful. That almost bankrupted our club and by all rights deserved more outrage from the supporter base than it received. If Bucks is on at a guess circa 500k-1million? that's not a sum of money I believe we should be frivolous enough to flush down the toilet.

Pretty sure it would be $1million minimum as I believe it has been reported in the past he's in the top handful (4 or so?) of paid coaches. This might be different with the 1 year extension however.

The business plan we have in place off field pretty much safeguards us from bankruptcy. Buckley is the type off person that would walk away before he derailed the club he loves, also he would probably take up another role, so the money wont be wasted.

So I Guess the Media will be all over this and IF we miss the Finals. The Media will be out to get Bucks Sacked
Not only the media. You can't have players coming out with statements that we have to make finals and then the board not following up on that. Something really has to horribly wrong if we don't play finals and Bucks stays.

So you think it's Fiinals or Bust for Bucks in 2016?

Yes but not in the same year unless Bucks steps aside early. Finals in 2016 and bust in 2017 at the latest.
