There are fair bigger problems than opposition players getting the ball eg; sloppy disposal and poor forward play

Agreed. He is ranked 3rd in clearances (as well as feeding in general play) which does highlight this.

Perhaps teams are finding him difficult to nullify in a contest (or backing their own structure), and are not super concerned with his output in general play.

Ok, so Mitchell just racks up the highest possession game in the history of the AFL and you suggest it probably wasn't worth tagging him anyway because some middle of the road outside wingman got more metres gained in another game played in the same round a few days prior? Martin is explosive, and breaks tackles and the lines with run, or disposal. Mitchell is not that player. He gets uncontested football by spreading, and then makes sure we keep possession.

Somewhere a coach is putting a value on a possession. They are comparing apples and oranges.
