Too many people on here think they know what is best for port Adelaide. I'm glad they aren't in charge. Too many cooks in the kitchen here

If I was coach I would have dropped Butcher after that North game - he was terrible. He went back to the sanfl and did ok and was worth another try to give some assistance to Schulz and Westhoff. We r now into our last few games and Schulz looks exhausted. Several times he didn't run for balls against Melbourne coz he was too tired from being scragged every game for the last 10 weeks. He's not superman and needs some help. Stewart doesn't look the answer to this problem. So we do not have a solution because we didn't try again with Butcher earlier in the year. Our structure in the forward line is very ordinary for a side pushing for top 4.

Another issue I have is the drop in form of our midfield. Luckily Robbie Gray is able to get the ball out consistently. I will be very disappointed if Newton is dropped. He should have been in a few weeks ago when our midfield dropped off alarmingly.

Been avoiding a post in this thread because I genuinely feel sorry for the bloke.

He doesn't go out there to be a jerk, he's not arrogant and yet he cops it more than most. That's the nature of footy I guess.

I think he knows as well as anyone that he's not up to it. It's becoming quite depressing to watch and I'd think Butch is battling to cope with it a great deal.

Pick a spot to stand anywhere at an SANFL ground and he's arguably the most talked about guy - in a negative light for the most part.

When he gets it inside 50, you'd never see so many scrunched up supporter faces in your life. We all bite our tongue and hope for the best - as does he. There's a general murmur across the ground, which Butch would have to be aware of. You watch his kicking for goal and there appears to be little method. I believe genuine panic sets in. There's an element of "hope I don't miss this" instead of a "I can kick this".

However, without fail, we all still hope he can turn it around. When he does kick them, the crowd is very vocal and supportive. On the contrary, when he misses them, the opposition supporters are equally as parochial.

Unfortunately, I don't blame Ken for not selecting him. Currently, I think there would be greater optimism with Mason Shaw and Mitch Harvey.

But, after all this, I would love to see Butcher turn it around and prove everything wrong in this post.

Or we work a trade with Gold Coast for Gorringe.... No pressure.... Does Butch surf?

Getting towelled by Rutten. His one chance, set shot from 30 metres it comes off his knee and dribbles over the line for a point. I've been wanting him to play in the power side without seeing much of him for the magpies. I can now see why he ain't getting picked.

We are completely ****ed if we lose either Schulz or Westhoff for any length of time over the next couple of years because the coaching staff have totally ignored tall forward development. None of our developing talls are getting near it so naturally none of them will get picked, and we'll continue to lose games at AFL level because we don't have adequate talls.

..... set shot from 30 metres it comes off his knee and dribbles over the line for a point. .....
That was absolutely shocking.

Not sure what those on the "Butcher must be playing AFL" bandwagon can see.

Lets do a pods and go for Waite from the blues
I know he's old and ( ahem) not the future but he can fill a marking gap for a year or so whilst we shunt through a few KPFs looking for a gem
Burgess may be able to improve his fitness even
Can anyone tell me if he is injury prone or not

I haven't posted on this thread as I felt it wasn't fair to single Butch out.. But I think it's fair to say that his kicking isn't up to SANFL standard let alone AFL. It maybe just the mental pressure but that kick for goals in the second quarter today is beyond a joke when there is no pressure on him. (In front of goals, not too far out, t's a home game , second quarter, and we are in front by a reasonable margin)

He ain't alone though. Only our small forwards are any scoring threat.

30 metres is being kind.

It was more like 15-20 metres out :(

Waite hasn't played a full season in his career. Honestly as i've said, I don't mind taking Waite as a backup, but i'd rather be playing Schulz, Westhoff and Shaw/Butcher because we desperately need to start getting AFL games into a developing KPF.

His kicking for goal isn't up to U10s standard and whatever he and the club have done to work on his kicking and set shot routine has failed spectacularly. It's astonishing as Macca19 said in the match thread that in 5 years at the elite level, he has regressed from a bad kick for goal to the worst set shot in state level football anywhere in Australia.

Even to the point of passing it off to Neade when a forward should be taking the kick

Eh, as much as he deserving of criticism that isn't one. He was on the boundary and Neade was directly in front.

Might just be mentally incapable of making it. :(

Change of environment. Mentally he is shot get him away from the pressure and start from scratch. We do a trade that everyone can win from. We know he can play but it won't be for us.

His problem is purely mental. His kicking is fine around the ground. Coaches can't get inside his head, why make excuses for it? It's either going to click one day or it's not. Blaming Hocking and Hinkley for it is erroneous and smacks of someone who can't admit that they've been wrong.

If Westy of Jay go down....Butcher will

Agreed. I am certain either Shaw or Harvey will play before the end of the season though.
Laugh at your peril.

Yes...we have many excellent kicks in our side now...so not sure you could question our ability to improve players kicking. Perhaps our current coaching staff may have assisted Butch when he was first drafted. It's been said that tall forwards take time to develop...we all agree...but how many forwards have the same kicking issue as Butch after 5 years being on a list?
I'll spew if another club takes him on and plays him in defence though. Surely it's worth a shot?
