Bye Bye Draft Picks

Carlton lost draft picks for cheating - end of discussion.

If we face similar fines for one of our players having health issues then the system is wrong to penalise an organisation for a miscreant employee. They shouldnt and wont remove draft picks simply to apese the high and mighty moral guardians out there.

If it pans out like it looks... Ben will be sacked and that will be the end of it.

Back in your box.

If you seriously think this is an issue of Ben being off the rails and the club has nothing to do with it, then you are either delusional or a high ranking WC official.

This has been an issue for WC and the AFL for several years. WC have not acted and the AFL will suffer. I doubt the AFL will let it go.

Whoa, whoa hold up a second. Since when has being addicted to an illegal substance come anywhere close to being a health issue? It's a self induced act, which is brought on by a serious lack of useful life skills.
You throw the kid out there, pay him bucketloads of cash and expect him to be able to manage his life.
Every AFL club should have programs in place in order to teach EVERY player a career for after football, whether it be PR, being an electrician or a plumber.

The eagles had been warned and if the AFL chooses to act then it's at their own discretion.

So you are saying that one player who runs with the rough end of town and a couple who dabble (who arent exactly robinson crusoe there) deserve the same penalty as cheating the salary cap?

...just to satisfy a bunch of trolls with an anti-eagle grudge?

Get real.

Get it in your head that this is not an isolated incident. Stop trying to dumb down the severity of what he has done.

Your club has potentially lost major sponsers, members and your best player. The AFL has explicitly told the club to take control of this situation or face the consequences, today's events have shown that WC have failed to handle a situation they should have handled years ago.

This running affair has a negative impact on the AFL as a brand, you don't see this?

It's all been laid out by the AFL, this issue is a major concern to the AFL, sponsership, promotion of the game.

To suggest it is just a case of one bad egg being a naughty boy shows a grossly miopic view.

The club can't hold Ben Cousins hand 24 hours a day.

He's an adult and has to be responsible for his own actions.

no but they should have sacked him ages ago. because he has been such a star he does his puppy face and they say "its cuz , we'll give him another chance". geelong were similar with gary ablett snr towards the end - hard to punish your idols sort of thing.

the eagles knew the risks and put their faith in him. he has screwed over their club but the afl is overdue to come down hard on them this time.

i'd say drugs and criminal activity are a much much bigger problem than salary caps!

Yeah, flatlining's a massive advantage, just ask any athelete.

Poor form by WC no doubt....but an advantage? I really don't see how.[/QUOTE]

read Malthouses article in The Australian earlier this year. A number of global studies have shown chemical components in Ice and other illicit drugs can be performance enhancing

West Coast Eagles - Premiers 2006 should ALWAYS have an asterix next to it

Mate this has gotten much bigger than a simple "anti-Eagle grudge" and if you think that's all it is, then you're only fooling yourself. Ben Cousins has destroyed the West Coast brand as we know it!

well said. this cheating club is about to get what it deserves

I can personally verify it as fact. I've had meth amphetamine and I've never had so much energy and stamina as I did on the nights I used it. But it's also a nasty, addictive drug that makes you do things you would never normally do. The last time I had it I vowed never again and have stuck to it. It's a pity Cousins couldnt do the same.

Pick 3 in the National draft should be stripped from the Eagles and returned to Carlton.

The Eagles agreed to control Ben, and they should be punished for not keeping their end of the deal
There has never been a Carlton player that has ever disgraced the game in the same way as Ben Cousins has

So we get Judd back?

Thanks

There will be no stripping of draft picks, there will be no fine, there will be no loss of premiership points. Ben will probably get sacked if found guilty, but that's still months off. If the AFL even try to start that process the whole thing will end up in court, and I trust our lawyers

They will only take picks off them if the club is seen to come down lightly on Cousins. Thats why if the club acts quickly and promptly with a decision it won't feel the wrath of the AFL.

Thats the only reason the AFL got involved last time, because Kerr got in big trouble a couple of times and never missed a game and only got a slap on the wrist. That incident along with Cousins being the last straw.

If WCE act quickly they wont lose picks. Up to them now.

From a Carltons supporters point of view I dont think WCE should lose draft picks, heres why.

We were punished, and in my opinion too heavily for our indiscretions, however we did cheat the salary cap which in turn could have won us games hence it is cheating and we did deserve do get punished. Though it has been proven other teams have done exactly the same thing and got off much lighter than we did.

In this case Ben has been caught/charged, whatever, outside the playing season. I just cant see why WCE can honestly do anymore than they have done. They cant be there all the time, watching him, stopping him from whatever stupid activities he gets up too in the off season. If this had happened during the season then it maybe different especially taking into account his past indiscretions.

The guy is a complete moron, he just cant seem to stay out of trouble and in truth he should not have played this year. He should have had a year off (maybe longer) to get over his issues. However it wasnt only WCE that overlooked this, it was the AFL as well, they allowed him to come back and play when obviously now it clearly wasnt right.

Now especially with the Judd trade, taking away their picks that they have gained is punishing the club and their up and coming players.......well I just cant see how it could happen. What would have happened if Judd was swapped for players? Would they be taken away? Whats the action.

In my opinion the AFL board are just as responsible as WCE for letting Cousins play again. It shouldnt have happened in the first place, but dont destroy the clubs future stars and young guns for what this idiot has done.

If the Eagles appear before the AFL Commission again, and with two listed players in strife you'd think that's at least a possibility... the aforementioned punishments included fines, suspension, loss of premiership points, loss of picks.

Fines - maybe, but perhaps not seen as severe enough
Suspension - of who? Chick is to be delisted anyway.
Loss of points - season's already over.
Loss of picks - starting to look like the favourite.
The AFL won't take their picks or points away.

They're one of the big boys and the Spew and Chester have no grudge against the WCE.

Fining them picks, money and draft picks would be an admission that the AFL's drug policy is an abject failure.

That won't happen.

The AFL won't do anything other than hit them with another fine which won't affect their performance and profits long term.

Unlike Carlton's $1 million fine which nearly sent one of the AFL's greatest clubs out of business and sent us to the wall.

Ben Cousins created the Eagles brand as we know it. His leadership and ability to inspire his team mates dragged a bunch of raw kids to second golden era at our club. His claim to it is probably greater than any other individual at our club... except perhaps woosha.

The only thing Ben has destroyed is himself.

Its a shame really, becasue we will probably have to sack him now and that will likely send him on a sprial in the wrong direction. If we do the right thing and try and help him along a better path, like the rogue son we love, we get shot at by wowsers riding very high horses.

Its all ghey. But i guess the trolls finally get thier big kill eh? way to go.

Why do you care about the WC brand. Thats just a marketing fallacy. We will always be able to get sponsors, we have a huge waiting list for sponsors and they have increased since our off field troubles started. We have a massive waiting list for members, we are the most profitable club in the league. Our brand is fine. Doesnt bother me if every second bloke thinks we do drugs. We cant control what people think.

I can see where you're coming from, but i think there are some more key issues here.

Agreed the AFL knew more about Cousins than they did about Carlton's salary practices. But there is a point where they take the clubs on their word, Cousins, like Carlton's player payments are ultimately the responsibility of the respective clubs. I think that WC knew more about Cousins than the AFL was informed, as such the responsibility falls more towards WC.

As for the nature of the sanctions taken, the AFL did not have Carlton's young players in mind when they punished Carlton (which, was roughly 7 years after the breaches). The point being, if the club is at fault, then it is the club that should be punished. If WC made assurances to the AFL that this issue would not arise then it falls back to WC.

As for the severity, not to say these two examples are comparable or not, i'd like to see some consistancy. This is the same administration, if they were harsh on Carlton then they should be harsh on WC, and they should be harsh on Hawthorn, Richmond. Adelaide, Brisbane and so on, should any other club err in some way.
