I don't agree with the knock on Caleb's kicking. In recent games he has been hitting up plenty of targets.

It's often tough to get clear air to get a clean kick away from stoppage so I am willing to cut him some slack there. He is definitely improving almost every aspect of his game so will be working hard to be the best he can.

Caleb is the same age as Lachie Neale was in 2016. Is 2024 Serong equal to, better than or not as good as 2016 Neale?

His kicking the last 2 games has been astounding

In my annoyance at our slow start in the WC game I suggested the club needs a therapist to tell them how to manage expectations.

Turns out this is exactly what Serong has done and he credits it for his remarkable season. It’s quite amazing for a 23 year old to have that sort of foresight.

Was a good interview.

My memory is not brilliant, but I feel that Neale just did his job - well, but Serong offers that plus strong leadership. Neale was great at improving himself where Serong improves others around him.

I might be wrong on Neale, I must admit I wasn’t as invested then.

I used to think that Brayshaw would be our best option for our next captain but Serong is also an outstanding candidate.

Either would be great but I am leaning toward Serong now.

In the end the players will decide but Pearce is doing a great job as captain at the moment so it won't be for a while.

I remember scrolling through social media after a game in the Qld hub and finding a posted vid from Teresa Hale, David Hale's partner watching the game in a room full of mums and kids as Caleb is lining up for his first goal vs St Kilda and one of the mums says " he's kicking to take the lead...he's so little too".

Here I dug it up to get the quote right. I'd forgotten he started out in the No 22 jumper. This is in the 3rd quarter of a game we won after being 6 goals down at quarter time.

Mark before the goal.

Serong’s kicking is under-rated, and he has excellent vision. One of his kicks this weekend looked like it had sprayed off the side of his boot… directly to the leading forward who goaled. Sublime. He’s a more damaging kick than Neale IMO.

Oh, and yes autocorrect, I did mean “goaled”, not “foaled” 🤣

He's actually a very good kick, he can pull off the bullet passes and high risk corridor kicks when in space. His kicking efficiency has always been affected by his inside role. Since he's the relentless improver type, I think eventually he'll shift focus to improving his outside game, damage and goal kicking.

Amiss see's one weekly I think. I get the feeling a lot of players from the dockers do.

Serong gets it so often in really tightly contested situations and then looks for the most attacking option, which often means reducing the time to balance and compose the disposal (and hitting the loose/contested ball at high velocity). I reckon his current quality/quantity ratio is well and truly something worth living with. Strong possibility j ratio is going to improve too as the weeks go on.

His quality stuff is such high quality, it makes me go “wow!”. Like, how did he see that?!?

Caleb is at least equal to 2016 Lachie Neale. I think Caleb brings a lot more leadership to the team and he will stay loyal to Freo. All that adds up to Serong is special, a generational talent.

I reckon he's a chance for the charlie, he's running third on the coaches' votes board and only 3 votes behind the leader.
AFLCA votes...
Freo have three in top 14
Swans have three also
Blues and Dogs have two each
Then singles
I think that is quite interesting...
Crazy Formidable Midfield Breadth (CFMB) expressed in numbers.
And... it will be hard to beat Daicos who doesnt have to share the votes.
Heeney also sharing votes.
Fyfie won a Brownlow at 23yo.*
Deelishus isnt it!
YOKAI!
*votes: Fyfe 31, Mundy 19, Sandi 14, Neale 10...bit of sharing there.
