Can someone tell me why Richmond gets to open the season time and time again?

This will be another 80+ demolishion job. Not that Carlton are a good side, especially without Brendan "i dont have the ball, this is shit im going home" Fevola, but surely a decent couple of teams like any of the ones that finished in the top 6 could face off??

Richmond have got a very big following, from (sometimes very hazy) memory they often get big crowds at the start of the season. I've got no problem with it.

We don't always lose in R1 though we were of course hockeyed last year.

The AFL want Richmond doing well. Richmond doing reasonably well means crowds and interest. The AFL want to establish Tiges V Blues R1 as a regular 80,000 draw and will succeed if both sides show half decent form in years to come. They want to avoid giving Collingwood another fixed blackbuster. Carlton V Collingwood is a nailed on sert and Richmond V Essendon is Dreamtime. That leaves only Richmond V Carlton or Essendon V Carlton capable of sustained huge attendances and the AFL see the need to pump Richmondbecause a good richmond will help increase attendances and interest.

Like it or not that is the reason.

When I sit down to a meal I always eat the veges I don't like first so I can enjoy the rest of the meal and finish with memories of the good bits.

Same principle with Richmond games.

Save it for after the game, if it's lop-sided. We've played in the season-opener six times in the last decade for four wins.

We've hardly had a Friday night game in three years, so put up with it.

In 2006 the Doggies played Richmond in Rd 1 on Friday night at Etihad. Whilst I cannot recall if it was actually the season opener, it was a Dogs victory to the tune of 120+ points, a little bit like the Tigers first game last year albeit against different opposition.

That's the official AFL reason?
