Just out of interest, according to the calculations in this table, 3,000m would be Level 15, Shuttle 6 on the Beep Test, and it takes 15:13 to get to that level of that particular test, but gets progressively harder thereafter (total distance/time is 4,940m in 22:03).
Dont really see how its relevent?

Completely different, and very few people can reach that level of the beep test...

Last preseason I did a lot of time trials. I had 2.3km, 3.2km, 3.9km, 4.8km and 6.7km loops that I used to do. Sure I got some good times and I felt pretty fit, but when the first contest of the first preseason game of the year came, I realised I hadnt done enough - you need to be running in fartlek style (hard then slow) to get the real benefits that suit the game.

Now days, I still do the odd TT (maybe one a week?) but when I go for a run, I run down to the oval (about a km away) and I do 10 laps where I sprint (well, run as fast as I can) for 30-40m, then slow jog for 30-40m, then sprint for 30-40m and so forth. I find it much more beneficial and much more relevent to the game style of AFL. Generally takes me about 30-35 minutes to do this, and it is much more beneficial than just going for a run for the same length of time/distance.

Well considering that very few people can reach that level, it is obviously a good test of someone's fitness then, isn't it?

I know it's not totally relevant, but I just thought it might have been of interest to some people looking to build their fitness through running - you have to go progressively faster the longer the test goes on, so IMO doing this test seems like a good way to build a fitness base early in a pre-season (instead of just steady-state running), and then you can move onto the Fartlek stuff later.

When did I doubt that it wasnt a good test of someones aerobic capacity? I didnt?

I said in my post that 3km Time Trials arnt the best way to build a fitness base relevent to the AFL game, and that you are better off doing more fartlek runs.

I just dont think that the fact it takes 15mins to do 3km in the beep test is at all relevent?

Apparantly Grima won the Roos' 3km time trial by more than 30 seconds in just over 11 minutes.
The times will be much lower now than they will be come late february.

I remember reading about players going from 12:30 in late october to around 10 minutes come the back end of the preseason.

I could've easily, when I was running. But I was also 70kgs and fit as hell. Oh, and younger /sigh. I think for most of "us" who were former runners, that's not a particularly difficult time to beat. As one poster mentioned above, if you're light and train 5-6 days a week running, not hard. Impressive for guys over 80kgs though!

I'm starting up this month, would like to get my 3.2 down to under 12 minutes by the end of the year, but coming off a fitness base of 0, might be a bit hard :(.
