It's a difficult balance the Chinese have to make - particularly here in their majestic capital Beijing. To balance 6,000 years of continuous civlisation with being the economic powerhouse of the 21st century AND find somewhere in fit 15+ million people in one place can be very difficult.
There have been some major compulsory acquisitions and massive redevlopment of large sections of the city but it's probably not until you actually spend a bit of time here that you can understand why this sort of thing really needs to be done.
As quaint and uniquely Chinese as these 'old quarters' are you've just got no idea how much evolution and redevelopment NEEDS to keep pace with the growing population of this mega-city and it's ever changing needs. This city is truly MASSIVE and, sometimes unfortunately, not much can be allowed to stand in the way of progress and things that can help allow this city function properly.
