One thing I've been wondering recently is whether we may have seen the last of Carrots? Aside from the fact that he seems to be somewhat injury prone currently, the emergence of Curnow as a premier stopper, and with the the potential of Cachia, is Carrots' selection (when fit) still a foregone conclusion?

I'm not sure myself, but I would be interested in the opinion of my more learned Navy Blue compatriots?

Yes, agreed. I suppose my question stems from the fact that I've been reading everyone's response over the last two weeks and one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that we cannot have too many negating players in the side. I may be on my own here but i think Curnow has had an outstanding year and is unlikely to be supplanted any time soon.

I suppose then my question is "How many negating players should we be playing week in, week out?"

He looks shot to me, which would be a shame and a quick fall considering he was strongly tipped to be captain this year. However it can easily be attributed to injury, and I would not be surprised at all to see him return next year as an integral player for us. His injury in 2012 was a significant factor in our initial fall.

At his best I'd still take him over Curnow, easily. I suppose the question is will he ever get back to his best. I sure hope so.
I like Curnow and I think he's flown under the radar a bit, had a great year, but not sure if there's room for both him and Carrots in the best 22.

id back him to develop his game if he was told he wouldn't be the negating player anymore. its great we arent dependent on him though, years gone by we wouldnt have anyone to turn to when we needed a run with player.

Had a tough run of injury, he wont play this year, get it right and will be back as one of our most important next year.

Missing him, in my opinion is one of the reasons our midfield has been struggling so much.

Hes not just a negating player. He is our number one in and under midfielder.

Let Curnow be the stopper from now on and just let Carrots play a more offensive attacking midfield role. Carrots has fixed his disposal and was very damaging last year with his possessions. Also, if we ever need 2 high quality taggers for a game we can always play Carrots as a tagger. For example against Collingwood one could go to Pendles and the other to Beams. Our issue this year is we have been playing 3 taggers or if it was just Curnow and Cachia, neither were being damaging with the ball. We know with Carrots more often than by his disposals are useful.

I had the same question when the injury was announced.

I'd not be surprised if he played off of a half forward flank through the midfield next season - I suppose in a similar style position as etsal1. It's not unusual for MM to play his prime movers off of flanks (both forward and defensive). He did this a lot at Collingwood and has done it this year predominantly with Simpson off of the half back. It would enable Carrots to rack up possessions, provide his intangibles and play a role well.

This.
Carrotts is good enough to be an offensive mid, and would probably appreciate being released from being a negating player. And if an opposition player is getting on top of Curnow we have a great backup up our sleeves.

Carrazzo quite similar to Stanton in that they're both very fit players and know where the space is. He's very handy as a linkman through the centre of the ground and is definite 22 when fit.

I've also been super impressed by Curnow's season though there's room for both in the team. Even when negating, Carrazzo's never had any issues finding the footy.

bit of yes and no from me.

for:
  • carrazzo is not a shadow-type tagger like curnow, which means he is accountable at stoppages, but backs himself in during general play.
  • carrazzo is really create with handball at stoppages which means he bring the outside runners into play.
  • has proven midfield chemistry with Judd and Murphy.
  • Very accountable and creative backman
  • has real mongrel and leadership which is what Mick is after at the moment
against:
  • not the quickest guy going around and age and injury won't improve that.
  • not a renowned forward.
  • has been out of the game for nearly two full seasons now.
  • may not be able to shake his soft tissue injury issue.

those calf injuries are a prick when you're in your 30's.

Exactly.

They don't call calf injuries " The old man injury " for nothing. They take longer to heal and are more prone to flare up when you are on the wrong side of 30 for an AFL footballer. :(

Curnow's work is so under rated on this forum. His disposal by foot has improved markedly and his ability to run with as well as spread puts him ahead of Carrots on this year's form. Carrazzo has been hit by injury this year - so time will tell.

Ed has done a great job as a tagger this year.

In years gone past he was given a run due to his in and under work which is good but not great by AFL standard.

The difference this year is extra strength and the tagging role.

Take away his tagging role and he would be borderline best 22.

For me, I would look at Carrazzo being an inside outside mid no longer in a stopper role that is now Curnow. Cachia would be our backup mid but would say that he now spend time in the back line on the small forwards releasing either simpson or touhy to the mid.

I'm not sure what will happen, all does depend on his injuries and how they progress with his age, but I'll say that regardless I am very glad Curnow has come on as the premier stopper and improved his offensive game when he does get the ball. Seen him get us out of a tight situation quite a few times now, seems to have more composure.

So worse comes to the worst, at least Carrots can be reasonably replaced. But hopefully he still has a fair bit of footy ahead of him.
