Hi Bay,

Given this round is basically "the off season" thought I'd write a post.

A recent discussion about Lachlan Fogarty joining Carlton after being moved on by Geelong, I got to thinking - how have other Geelong cast-offs gone in recent times?

Geelong has a long history of trading in stars (Ken Hinkley from Fitzroy for a pick they got nothing with), Premiership Star and Geelong hero Brad Ottens etc.

But what about the other way?

We've got the classics like trading out Brent Prismall (36 games for Essendon) for the pick that got Geelong Steve Motlop (and then got Gazza back) for 217 games. This is also the beginning of the Jeremy Cameron trade. Djerrkura to the Bulldogs for the pick that netted James Podsiadly was a cracker too.

But let's look a little more recently to Geelong players pulling on the boots for other clubs in recent times (unless they've been delisted):

2017:

Carlton receive Colac product Darcy Lang. In the trade Geelong receive Pick 58.

  • Lang plays 20 games for Carlton.
  • Geelong grab Gryan "Messi" Miers 120 games and counting.

Steve Motlop makes a run for Port who offer him something incredible. Geelong choose not to match but get compensation that allows them to get Gazza back. Motlop plays 50 or so games for Port and earns his entire $3.2 million contract by kicking the winning goal against Adelaide in a Showdown with a few seconds to go. I believe these are known as "SANFL flags".

2018:

Geelong give Linc McCarthy an out and send him to Brisbane for a few picks. He's still going strong, which is great.

Geelong use one of those picks to get access to Carlton's pre-draft VFL/SANFL/WAFL picks and use it to select Nathan Krueger.

They use the other pick to get Gary "Mr Septemer" Rohan to the western districts.

Geelong send George Horlin-Smith up to the Gold Coast to try and bring some class to their outfit and lift their standards. A leader in every way, George plays a handful of games.

Jackson Thurlow is sent to Sydney for a pick that nets Geelong Darcy Fort.

2019:

The Big One! Tim Kelly gets shipped off to the Eagles for half of Basil's vast fortune. Kelly's still going alright in a dogshit Eagles side.

Geelong use the picks to get Jeremy Cameron. The picks used by GWS are....well....

Zac "You've Got A Friend In Jesus" Smith is sent back from whence he came (the Gold Coast) to spread the good word of the Geelong Football Club. He plays 9 games before hanging 'em up and getting on his knees (to pray, you perverts).

2020:

Lachie Fogarty
is surplus to needs, so is shipped off to Carlton for a 2nd rounder and change. Well done, Lachie!

Nakia Cockatoo is shipped off to the witch doctors at Brisbane. He plays a handful of games for them before retiring.

2021:

Nathan "The National Park" Kreuger
decides he wants to join the ferals at Victoria Park. Geelong send him on his way for a second rounder and he manages to string 7 games together over 3 and a half years.

Darcy Fort battles it out for 27 games at Brisbane and counting behind the Big O.

The Dastardly Dan Andrews keep as young Jordan Clark from seeing his family for 3 years, so in 2021 Geelong do the right thing and send him home for peanuts. He's still going extremely well and is probably the biggest loss Geelong have had in recent years (apologies to Tim Kelly).

2022:

Cooper Stephens
gets shipped off to Hawthorn because Collingwood are peasants. Though highly touted, he hasn't managed to crack Dingley's Elite Youf Squad. As part of the trade, Geelong receive Oliver Henry who is leading Collingwood's goal kicking list this year despite not playing for them. Geelong successfully burn two Melbourne clubs with one trade. Excellent.

2023:

Esava Ratugolea
agrees to form Part II of Geelong's long game of sinking the Port Adelaide Football Club. Part I was obviously Ken Hinkley. Anyway, Esava has been trying his guts out for Port with 12 or so games so far and likely just as many incidences of abuse from over the fence.

On the whole, Geelong have traded out a couple of reasonable players, but for the most part haven't done themselves any damage long term and in some cases, have actively damaged other teams lists.

Jordan Clarke has been one of our best this year, great fred!
I'm happy to see him fulfilling his potential. Adds to an already exciting Fremantle lineup.

The main pick we got in return was used to pick up Future GOAT, Toby Conway. Which also means you get to keep Sean Darcy.

A win-win if ever there was one :)

Pleased to hear.

I used to detest the cats, but after they took 15 first rounders for Tim Kelly, I don’t mind them.

Looking forward to you guys paying unders for Harley Reid.

We're going to send Mitch Duncan back to Perth, plus a few fourth rounders and Rhys Stanley.

It'll be Vardy all over again.

What year was the Billie Smedts for Zach Tuohy debacle? Geez we've lumped them with some absolute rippers in recent times.

TL;DR

(Log in to remove this ad.)

Delisted Cat Jonathan Simpkin won a flag with the Hawks a decade ago

Big game for Cats Cast-off, Jordan Clark, today.

Reckon he'll bring a bit of "Geelong: Coach Killer" attitude and get Bevo sacked after a 10 goal belting.

Starting at 2017? How convenient, given the 2016 premiership CHB was former cat Joel Hamling

Ah yes! Joel! Had he been handed around to Fremantle prior to that? Or did he go there after?
Went to Freo as his dad was sick. Sadly his dad has now passed, and he's currently playing at Whitten Oval as the Swans KPF in their VFL side. Shocking injury run at Freo, poor fella
