Chad Wingard

Lets not confuse good in front a camera with leadership potential. They need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Which immediately rules out the likes of Chaplin. I'd rather not nominate players as future captains on drafting. With Wingard I'd rather the next 12 months are spent getting some bulk on him. If that means he doesn't play AFL at all, or misses some SANFL games due to needing to recover, so be it.

I'm also basing this on him being U18 captain,

Just watched Wingard's PTV interview and to be honest I don't think I've ever seen a kid so excited and happy to be drafted by Port Adelaide. So refreshing. Great speaker and so damn modest.

I wonder about the families "stance" on Port Adelaide because if the kid respects the "merger" and our history then he is sure to grow to love it like Chad Cornes and any "Crows man" who has the privilege of actually getting to this club :D

Hey Port fans.

I was at the draft last night and without a doubt, Chad was the happiest draftee in the room! He could not wipe the smile off his face. I actually spoke to him, his parents and Matty Primus as they were leaving and told them as much. They agreed and his Dad said he is a very happy lad. The fact that he is the only player picked before my Tiges picked Ellis that doesn't have to move interstate may have something to do with it!

Anyway, he came across really well, down to earth and friendly, you will have a new supporter favourite I think.

Don't know if your media guys have posted it yet, but they were interviewing his dad for PTV as well. So look out for that.

Cheers and good luck next year!

He was a good pickup for Port ... and I'll keep telling myself 'He was a flight risk with a history of concussions' as he becomes a star ;)

Hopefully its our turn to snag a gun that was overlooked because of injury questions (apart from Trengove).

This does little to help my uncontrollable urge to get a bit excited about next year, I promised I wouldnt. :D

Are we finally getting a positive vibe around the place with the appointments of the new assistants and finally snaring the best SA lad in the draft? Looking forward the seeing how Ben Newton pulls up next year because they said that he had some talent that was curtailed because of injury.

Wingard, Boak, Gray, and Hartlett all have the potential to be big. I don't expect to move up the ladder too quickly but I expect to see some entertaining footy next year. The last few years have been painful. Here's to hoping.

I love Wingard.

The Power has revealed it put the fearless SA under-18 captain through extensive medical testing before drafting him and he has been given a clean bill of health.

"Our doctor, Mark Fisher, examined Chad and said there are no risks with him whatsoever," Port national recruiting manager Geoff Parker said about Wingard's history of concussions .

"We did our homework, we had him at the club for testing several times and there's no evidence that he's a greater injury risk than any other player.

We have a couple on our list now who could end up as AFL champions.

Welcome aboard Chad, and bring the family over.

From what I see and hear, is he the best pick up Port has ever had?

I like what I hear from this boy, and Port were really smart about this, you would hire him as the club's accountant, from what we hear.

By the sounds of it, he may end winning the Rising Star Award....which can only boost his stocks..

Would you sign him up 3 or 5 years? is he worth 5 years?

Congratulations Port and Chad and supporters......look forward to seeing kick his first goal......!!

I'm excited too, but can we all just stop this talk of Rising Star Awards and 5 year deals? He'll get a 3 year deal like all first round draftees, no clubs would sign up anyone for 5 years, just way too big a risk and no players would agree to it (unless you are offered unbelievable money like Judd, Ablett, Scully, Ward) - especially young draftees with lots of potential who could command a much more significant monetary offer when he has actually proven he can play AFL football well.

I'm ecstatic we have him and think he will be a gun for us, but theres so many things that can happen which prevent draftees who are under age superstars from developing into good AFL footballers. Lets just wait and see and support him and the club all the way.

You may need to bring that one out a few times during the year me thinks. :D
Hopefully the ones that are over the top in a positive way now will not go over the top in a negative way at some stage later in the year.

IMO we should cotton ball him and work on getting his body AFL ready as hard as possible for as long as it takes. I think Andre and some others have also posted along similar lines.

Yep, agree with this. The way he has been talked up at times on here concerns me that some people have some expectations of this kid that he is never going to live up to.

I sure hope he is good, and he looks like he is a chance to be, but man, lets give the kid a chance before we start annointing him the saviour of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

I don't know who did his head scans, but after my concussions the doctor didn't say anything like "I've had head scans and from what I've been hearing from professionals, once you get a concussion nothing serious can happen to you, you can't have permanent brain damage, unless you get concussion again in that two-week recovery period."
