should we reconsider picking another spinner in the squad?
Probably not for mine. Head, Lab and Maxwell are all adequate support acts along with Zampa for spin. Think you need to add seamers as the two misding are seamers so it's a like for like replacement.

More the timing is odd. Like why right now?

According to the article I quoted above, he’s only played 1 ODI since he was dropped from the 11 after the 2023 ODI WC semi-final - so maybe he had a really good, honest chat with McDonald about where he fitted in the team and that if he was more likely to just be a squad member then that place could be better utilised on a player who’s part of the future rather than him being there to run drinks

Potentially, just weird that it was seemingly out of the blue with Marsh, Haze, Cummins all unavailable. Was likely his best chance at playing.

You’d assume Webster comes in now.

Probably one of the greater mysteries how he managed to be around the ODI squads in the national set up, given how much 50 over cricket he has played domestically.

With the amount of T20 cricket available around the world these days, I dont see this impacting his career too much.

Nope.

The changes named are:

Travelling to Sri Lanka ahead of the two ODIs next week:
Tanveer Sangha
Jake Fraser-McGurk
Ben Dwarshius
Spencer Johnson

Staying in Sri Lanka:
Sean Abbott
Cooper Connolly

Quite surprising news, with all the other injuries there was a pretty decent chance he'd be in the XI. I presume the hamstring injury he has apparently sustained in the SA20 was the reason behind the call, must not have trusted his body to get through bowling more than four overs.

Have no idea who replaces him. Maybe Webster. Not a lot of fit ARs at present.

Can't afford to be injured for the IPL.

So it’ll likely be:

Head
Short
Smith
Labuschagne
Inglis
Maxwell
Hardie
Starc
Johnson/Abbott
Ellis
Zampa

Johnson/Abbott
Fraser-McGurk
Carey
Dwarshuis

Travelling reserves - Tanveer Sangha, Cooper Connolly

Fair enough, had t seen those announcements. Not sure I love Abbott instead, but the selectors se to rate him

Starc has now pulled out too.

Australia Champions Trophy squad: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Travelling reserve: Cooper Connolly.

So from the original squad its Cummins, Hazlewood, Marsh, Stoinis, Starc out. Abbott, Dwarshuis, Fraser-McGurk, Johnson, Sangha in.
