The fact that we're still 4th for PA overall shows that scores generated from clearances are not something that tend to hurt you too much.

I'd be interested to know where scores were generated from in our losses though. If it was from clearance then it would show how teams are exploiting us.
Well depends what it is. But we gave up 5 goals against Brisbane from stoppage which is basically a loss right there. Even 2-3 can swing a game when we don't tend to score from them ourselves

Apart from the self explanatory, the issue with constantly going back to the well with a cooked T Mac is the lack of continuity in the forward line. We pick him against a garbage West Coast and he kicks 4, then reverts to the mean against Essendon = dropped. How can a team build any sort of synergy with leading patterns, spacing etc when the personnel and balance of the forward line changes every other week? If Grundy and Gawn weren’t pushing forward so much, I could see a role for T Mac (although I’d rather J Smith) in the absence of Petty but it makes little sense. We’re probably better off going smaller with Fritsch as a FF switching with JVR at CHF with the occasional change up of Gawn or Grundy (not ****ing both at the same time) pushing forward to create a mismatch.

Obviously this is all moot if we continue to bomb wildly into the forward 50 but going smaller might just force those delivering the ball to think twice with how they use it.

Have we reverted to bees to a honey pot stuff, can't wait to get smashed by Collingwood's midfield as Mitchell wins the ball on the inside meanwhile our mids get sucked in leaving guys like Daicos with all the time in the world.

Not so much bees to the honeypot as much as wanting to repeatedly handball in tight and as a result when the opposition get it we’re forward of the ball waiting for a handball receive and not interested in protecting the defensive side or laying tackles to stop them when they get it.

To me we seem to be always aiming for a Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang style stream out the front. Can work great but is high risk and not sustainable against an organised opponent.

Would take a week to compile but I’d love to know how many times we’ve had the ball in our control in the centre square but not got the clearance, purely because we wanted to get the ‘end of third quarter Grand Final’ hero clearance instead of clearing the stoppage and letting our forwards compete 1v1.

Usually those handball turnovers result in the easiest clearances to the opposition because there’s nobody in position to tackle.

If we lose this week im going to be so disgusted, might ring up talkback radio and give us a Snapper bake.

I don't analyse stoppages but there was one that caught my eye. It was in the centre square, we won the tap and were streaming forward but the freo mids were right on to it, caused a turn over and they ran away with ease. Apparently dominated the taps but lost the clearances by 2, something is a miss, we need to start being defence first then attack. I don't think we are getting sharked just that opposition teams are just much more prepared in the midfield battle.

Nathan Buckley watched the game from the Freo coaches’ box on the weekend. His observations were that most sides get their wings to hold their width at stoppages acting as defensive sweepers whereas Melbourne’s play theirs ‘tighter’. The result being that if the stoppage is ceded out the front, Melbourne’s players are often caught offside making easy entries into attacking 50 for their opponents.

ABC did an article about this earlier in the year.

Although they were making a case that we were doing the opposite

Leading to the Fredrick goal, just laziness by the guys on the inside and bad positioning outside by Langdon. Recipe for disaster.

Worst part about that is we have a 4 on 2 defensive side and still cough it up. It's basically a crap shoot of who wins it first because everyone's so close together. Neither side has any real plan here.

If we aren't going to worry about winning the stoppages the least we should be doing is setting up properly defensively, thats a copy cat of how we beat the dogs in the third quarter of the granny, sweeper getting in too close and nobody there to cover the potential overlap outside with Langdon caught out of position.
