Port did the right thing in offering pick 10 up front. We would have been forced to back down eventually, wasting valuable time for negotiating other trades in the works. So now it's a matter of sorting out the 'minor' part of the deal.

Works for me too. I don't really consider our 2016 first for pick 16 to be a significant loss anyway, I'd rather have the 2015 pick than the 2016 pick. The only issue is that it leaves us a bit hamstrung if we get another gun player wanting to come to Port next year, but surely our luck is due to run out after three years of attracting a gun player to the club.
Maybe we can start recruiting free agents instead. What's the list looking like for next year?

Yep any high profile pickups in 2016-17 will have to be via FA.

Pick 10 + 2016 R1 for Dixon and Pick 16 - I could live with that.

that isn't to bad ...

and if they didn't do that .. maybe something like this

Pick 10 + 2016 R1 for Dixon and the Suns 2016 2nd round (hopefully low 20's if this year is anything to go by)

and if things go well for us next year our 2016 first round pick will be in the late teens (15 - 18)

and if we get their 2nd round (21 - 25) it might be a win especially if Dixon goes well

I'm selfish with my reasoning behind why I like it - I think Ryan Burton will be there at 16 and we have more chance of grabbing him then than we would with an earlier / later pick.

Why do I have to fall in love with a certain draft pick every year. Although in my defence, most of them look to be good ones (Wingard, Stringer, Aish (miss so far), Duggan).

  • Clubs can trade one year in the future only.
  • Clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period. If they don't, they will face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks.
  • If a club trades a future first-round selection, it may not trade any other future selection from that same draft. But if a club keeps its future first-round selection, it can trade any of its future selections from other rounds.

I think, but I am not certain, that the "four year period" mentioned above starts with this year, being the first year that future pick trading is allowed.

I believe you are right. As I read it what we have done over the past two years is of no consequence. We have to use two first round selections in the period 2015-2018.

in 2017 we should have Trent Burgoyne (son of Peter) that we will have to bid for with our 1st or 2nd pick in that draft

out by a couple years mate. He'll be ready for the draft in 2019 I believe. And still a lot of water to cross under that bridge yet.

* Edit: Also we will need to juggle a few picks at that stage as Jackson Meade is also tracking very nicely nicely. Is a better prospect than Trent at this stage.

So we should trade our 2017 first round pick in 2016 so we can then pick him up for our 2nd round pick instead:)(if he has half his dad's talent.)

Is Jackson a ruck or key forward / defender?

I was going by this (which was put out - 20aug15)

Burgoyne prototype MK3

Trent Burgoyne is the 15yo son of Power premiership player Peter Burgoyne. He played in the indigenous kickstart program early this year and was BOG in his first game. This despite being the youngest player in the squad. SANFL indigenous program co ordinator Shaun Ford believes he has what it takes.

"Trent is a very smooth mover and is very similar to the way Peter goes about it ? "I think he will be outstanding when he goes away even against the older boys" "In 2 years time he will be something special"Trent will be eligible to be a father/son pick for Port in 2 years

Maybe wrong that but still related, isn't anything other than a premiership next year a fail? So trading next years first rounder for 16 now is no different.
Before others say 'gawd Jello, fail really?', surely the last 2 year trajectory and shit truck we dealt out this year warrants this expectation.

he isnt 15yo.....he would have been playing in the U 14 s this year if not for injury.....collar bone from memory.

he played in the Metro West U 14 GF a month or so ago for Port Districts. he truned 14 this year. hence he turns 18 in 4 years time.

he is tracking nicely as an all round footballer at this stage. has tended to play all types of roles, as is the norm in the junior levels. but goes alright in all positions, especially on ball. when he moves its like watching Darren run around.

I assumed it was a sliding 4 year bracket

Where are you hearing that mate? Be nice to be done this week.
From someone whom I think would have a fair idea. Could be wrong of course ... But I think it's much closer than it may seem.

Ashcrofts stance was noticeably softer today I think as well
