Lions’ Den A Buzz As Hornets' Charlotte Mullins Drafted

There’s a buzz about the Lions’ den with the Aspley Hornets' Charlotte Mullins headed to the Lions at Pick 70 in Wednesday evening’s 2022 NAB AFLW Draft.

The 15th Lions Academy player to join the squad, Mullins is a versatile midfielder with plenty of upside.

The 17-year-old has showcased her high football IQ and class with ball in hand across a range of roles for the Hornets this QAFLW season.

A home-grown Queensland talent, Mullins joins fellow draftee Ella Smith as the next generation of AFLW talent to be drafted out of the Aspley Football Club as the game continues to grow across South East Queensland.

Head Coach Craig Starcevich believes the Mullins’ style and work ethic will complement that of the current squad.

“Charlie is small midfielder/forward who is a clean ball winner and precise user by foot,” Starcevich said.

“She shows great courage and toughness in and around the contest and applies plenty of defensive pressure.

“Whilst she’s happy to get inside 50 to assist with scoring, what has really grabbed our attention is her willingness to get back into the defensive 50 to help her team win the ball back. That type of work ethic fits nicely with our game style.”

In her first AFLW game, things could not have started better for young Lion Charlotte Mullins, who kicked a goal with her first touch in the big time. After being drafted prior to season seven, Mullins sat out to complete her final year of school, but wasted no time in making her mark on debut. After taking a mark at the top of the goalsquare from a cleverly centred Orla O'Dwyer kick, Mullins went back and slotted the goal, much to the excitement of her teammates.

The Lions look to have unearthed another clever half-forward in Charlotte Mullins. The off-season departure of Greta Bodey to Hawthorn opened the door for another forward, and after spending last season on the list without playing as she completed high school, Mullins has made every post a winner in her three games to date. She kicked the first goal against the Swans, finishing with 15 disposals and two goals but it's the nuance to her game that's most eye-catching, with her instinctive shepherd to pave the way for a Sophie Conway goal particularly clever.

Versatile Lion, high-flying Hawk nab Rising Star noms

HAWTHORN ruck Lucy Wales and Brisbane forward Charlie Mullins have been nominated for the AFLW Rising Star award for their performances during round nine.

Mullins, playing on her 19th birthday, picked up 11 disposals, seven tackles and kicked a goal in Brisbane's loss to St Kilda on Saturday.

A product of Brisbane's Academy, Mullins was picked up by the Lions with pick No.70 in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft.

Mullins 25-Game Milestone Kicks Off Second Finals Campaign

Brisbane Lions youngster Charlie Mullins is set to play her 25th AFLW game this Sunday afternoon against Hawthorn.

Drafted from Aspley QAFLW prior to Season 7 in 2022, Mullins spent 12 months on the Lions list before getting her AFLW opportunity in 2023 season opener.

Since then, the silky right-footer has played every game available while taking on more responsibility in her second season.

Playing last year predominantly as a small forward, Mullins has found herself spending more time on the wing and at times in the midfield this season - becoming a consistent performer.

Rewarded with selection in the 2024 AFLPA’s 22under22 squad this week, Mullins was grateful for her opportunity but is eyeing team success in the short term.

“It means a lot to be playing 25 games this weekend, I’ve been part of this Club forever through the Lions Academy and now at AFLW level,” Mullins said.

“Coming into this team last year was an amazing experience winning a flag, but this group of girls are amazing to be around day in and day out, so that makes coming into the Club so enjoyable.

“It’s been a great year for me personally, but we are focussed on going deep into finals this season and I know everyone in the group is really motivated to do that.”

Mullins 25-game milestone comes as the Lions travel to Melbourne this weekend to take on Hawthorn in the Second Qualifying Final at IKON Park from 1:05pm on Sunday afternoon.
