Chinese Democracy

I think the more I listen to it the more I'm enjoying it. Love Street Of Dreams, If The World, If There Was A Time, Sorry and Madagascar. Few of the others I'm warming to though. Cant stand Catcher In The Rye, This I Love and IRS though.

Well I've played it a few times and I'm trying to give it a chance but gee it's hard. I must admit it is getting better after a few listens as after the first play I thought it was atrocious.

The first 2 songs are almost unlistenable.

Better is better but it would want to be otherwise this CD could be getting thrown across the room. I don't particularly like Better all that much really but it at least picks the album up after a woeful start. The music is very jumbled on this song. They throw a bit of everything at you but it just sounds jumbled. It doesn't go anywhere. A better arrangement was needed here.

Streets Of Dreams isn't a bad song but doesn't do much for me. He seems to be showing off his range of vocals here which is ok but he pastes it on a bit thick.

If The World has a nice idea but I just think he got lost somewhere along the way. It's the vocals. He just goes way too high throughout the song. Gets annoying.
First few listens I was intrigued and found something very familiar.
Then it hit me.
Any Pink Floyd fans out there notice something interesting about this song?
The rhythm section throughout this song is almost identical to Echoes.
Actually not almost identical it is an exact steal.

There Was A time is another jumbled song. The first 2 minutes are terrible.
It does have some nice parts in the middle with that nice sounding guitar but again Axel just doesn't know how to do arrangements. He goes for too much.
The sweet middle part 3 minutes in is however excellent.
Again his vocals are just annoying when he goes for the epic screech.

By this time I'm thinking I thought this was supposed to be a rock album. Well no it's not.

Catcher In The Rye is just more filler . Hard to listen too actually. I find it hard to see the point. Why put songs like this on an album that you want to be great? Pointless rubbish.

Ok I'm getting ready to throw this CD at the wall. What was a few nice moments has turned back to how this album started. Scraped should have been just that.

The next song is even worse. Absolute rubbish.

Sorry well so he should be after the last 3 atrocious songs. This song isn't much chop either but at least it resembles something of a decent song.
It's just a rubbish song though but on this album it's one of the better ones. That's not a good thing.

IRS is just more rubbish. You can listen to it but Axl is Axl and goes over the top and tries to do way too much in one song. He should have used that idea to create a whole album but instead he does it in most songs.
Making so many changes in one song leaves it jumbled. Again he is screaming out for someone to help him write. He just can't arrange songs at all. Terrible.

Madagascar goes a bit over the top but I don't mind this song.
Once again this song sounds very similar in parts to Roger Waters What God Wants.

The final 2 songs are really good.
The high voice in This Is Love is annoying though.
I just don't like his screechy voice but this is a really good song if it was sung with his normal voice.
Really nice music here.

Prostitute is one of the better songs on the album.
Seems to be one of the few songs that he stayed true to.
He stays focused to the theme of this and doesn't stray.
Pity he didn't try this approach throughout the album.

Overall this album is a bit of a miss mash. Has some very nice parts but also has way to much horrendous rubbish.
Musically it is very good and does reach some massive highs.
Vocally i think he tries for high notes just because he can but to me it sounds awful. His normal singing voice is good though.

The problem with this album is Axl just isn't a writer. He gets an over the top idea and tries to put it all into 5 minutes. That's ok once and a while I guess but he really tries to do it every time. It just doesn't work.
He could have done that with a view to a killer album but this isn't that type of album.

Other then that half the songs here I can't really listen too as they are just plain awful.
The other half does leave you thinking that yes their was an idea here but perhaps it got lost amongst the rubble.

Finally some parts of songs on this album have quiet a few similarities with parts of other songs .
Axl is obviously a huge Pink Floyd fan. :)

see this is the problem with people today, all you have to do is listen once...and say "wow, thats a piece of shit".

whats the point of analysing a piece of shit? its pointless, thats all it is and it isnt going to change no matter how many times you listen to it. you dont have to feel obliged to listen to it just because its got a guns n roses sticker on it.

Axl is a mad songwriter (November Rain case in point) - he just needs to have others to focus/enhance what he does - like some old familiar faces.

Axl's written two good songs. November Rain and Welcome to the Jungle. That's it. Most of the rest of GnRs good songs were written by Izzy.

Bullshit.

The majority of songs were Rose/Stradlin. What makes you think it was Izzy who wrote them.

Axl is without a doubt a brilliant song writer.

Add This I Love to the list.

All i will say is it's different from the usual GNR stuff we are all used to listening to.

IMO I actually like the album (Bar the first 2 tracks).

Are we talking lyrics or music? Axl wrote lot of the lyrics early on but the music and album compositioning (which IMO was what made GnR great and what makes Chinese Democracy so crap) was almost all Izzy and Slash.

I don't know where you heard that but my impression has always been that Rose was the major songwriter both lyrically and musically. The link below show the credits for every song prior to CD. It does not break it down to lyrics or music though.

Rose either co-wrote or wrote entirely November Rain, Don't Cry, Estranged and This I Love which are 4 of the most Epic songs I have heard.

The stradlin/Rose combo was brilliant though.

Slash's book. Axl wrote most of the lyrics for AfD. Izzy and Slash wrote most of the music. Izzy wrote both the good songs on GnR Lies (Patience and Used To Love Her).

I’m very surprised, I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but after a couple of listens, I really like it. Certainly sounds like someone has obsessed over it, which of course someone has, but none the less, some quality work.

Hard to think of it as a Guns N’ Roses album though..

Borrowed from another forum - so apt for this album;

When I was a kid I remember seeing a hot rod magazine. In the back there was a cartoon about a guy who had the brilliant idea of creating a talking car. He worked on it for years and years, and was finally able to make it work. When he wheeled it onto the street the people were amazed. "Look, there's one of those old fashioned talking cars."

The good songs are really good, but there are some shockers on this album. Definetly feels over worked. It's a good listen but I expected a fair bit more from an album that took so long to complete.

best album ever :thumbsu:...

and people who are whinnying that 'it like took sooooo long to be released' just don't understand the mechanics of true genius...

you can't just invent this shit out of thin air people!! Like Crackerbarrel, it takes tiiiiiiimmmme.......
