Chris Davies - PAFC General Manager of Football

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Chris Davies is the Football Manager we had to have. He is very good at his job- hence why he was considered for a senior position with the AFL a couple years ago and why Collingwood tried to head hunt him. Sure, believe if you want that he tried to get the Collingwood job but failed- the facts and all the reports say otherwise. But why let reality stand in the way of blind, misdirected rage.

Davies is conservative- he has to be. We all know Port would be crucified out of existence if we crossed the line. The huge fine over the 2023 concussion incident is proof of that. If Port did an Essendon drugs saga, we would probably have our AFL licence removed. So Davies is conservative and a diplomat- never poking the bear, never throwing his clipboard.

He is not List Manager- that is Cripps. Davies may sign off the trade paperwork (I don’t know) and he may have the power of veto, but Cripps makes the main calls 99 per cent of the time.

Truth is we are lucky to have him and all the anger directed at him comes from people who don’t really understand what he does.

Eloquently put Jordy.

CD is the biggest Hinkley Stan so in my eyes he is one of the biggest factors in an over a decade of failure.

Yeah nah. CD is a loser of the highest order.

Takes a brave man to post that on this board atm 😂, and I'm definitely not saying you’re wrong.

This guy should work at the AFL, what a politician. Seems to have a very tricky way of never answering any questions. My guess is a lot of meetings before the meetings, so he can manipulate the content of a conversation.

For someone who has presided over the footy dept for the worst period in the club's history, he loves answering questions as if he doesn't have to explain himself and everyone in the room is beneath him.

The problem is that if you keep allowing your boss to treat you badly it never changes. The continual poor treatment of our club by the Afl indicates those in charge have failed to gain adequate respect imo. So are you advocating noone ever stands up to bullies coz you can't poke the bear?

I have a different take. It's far better hearing a diverse range of opinions. Far more educational.
I agree wholeheartedly. Especially when they are well thought out and explained, such as this one was. Makes the board a lot more interesting too.

Assuming he is there in 2026?

Let's see what happens. Now that Hinkley is leaving, I won't be surprised if other people loyal to Ken leave as part of a footy department shuffle which imo would bring some new life into the Club.

Guaranteed to happen I reckon.

Koch looked a little unsettled in the Ken Carr presser.

Probably realising they never made it.

I know this posts is months old now but I couldn't really disagree more.

If "conservative" is code for "unwilling to make uncomfortable decisions", then sure.

He isn't the list manager, but he's the list manager's direct superior. He's the head coach's direct superior. If we're having problems in these areas it's his responsibility. But he's been a key player in embedding a culture where everyone being comfortable is more important than the club being successful. That's happened under his watch. He's responsible for it. He's pushed it onto the board and changed the definition of success at Alberton. He's ensured all his mates stay employed and that anyone who rocks the boat is gone.

You can argue that he's simply enacted the board's will, but it's more than that. In 2017 we made the finals and lost pretty embarrassingly, and Koch demanded better, only to be rebuked by the players. In 2017, success at Port Adelaide wasn't simply making finals. Koch didn't believe that then, but here we are in 2025 with simply finishing in the top half most of the time being apparently acceptable. Who is responsible for that lowering of standards? Who changed the board's mind about what success looks like?

If Chris Davies was good at his job, with the resources at his disposal, we would have made a grand final during his tenure. 11 other clubs have made a grand final during his tenure and apart from Boak and Wines, he's completely turned over the list in that time.

It's a results business and he's a failure. He's pushed a culture of hiring from within, surrounded himself by people he likes instead of the best candidates, and we're a laughing stock in this league.
