Criminals are less likely to commit a crime if the potential victim can shoot back at them. Look at Switzerland for example. One of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world and one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the world. Per capita they have less gun crime, assault, sexual assault, robberies etc than Australia.

That's how you end up with people killed for their wallet... no risk of them shooting back if you take them out first.

Australia is not Switzerland, out culture is much more similar to America and as such if we had guns we would have America's associated gun problems.

Criminals are more likely to shoot you first if they think you can shoot back.

I'm sorry but I like being able to go for a walk on my lunch break and no there is almost zero chance of some ****wit shooting at me

I never said everyone in Australia should own guns. I said overall violent crime has increased, which your stats confirm as both assaults and sexual assaults have increased over the years.

If law-abiding citizens were allowed to own firearms, I believe those stats would decrease significantly.

No such thing as a law abiding citizen having an automatic weapon in Australia. I don't trust my neighbours to have guns as they haven't got the appropriate training in when/ how to use and not use. And when there is no checks as in the US well you get the results that we see.

Bottom line is that we need to enforce some cultural imperialism for their own good.

He deserves a strong punishment yes but 38 years until parole for driving a car when you're 17 is horrendous.
I'll admit I haven't followed every detail of this case, but my understanding was that he was fully aware that he was driving someone for the purpose of finding someone to murder, wasn't he?

If that is the case then IMO he is as guilty as the person who pulled the trigger and he should be thankful that he'll get out some day.

If I'm mistaken and he was just unknowingly driving with friends who planned to kill someone, I'd agree it is harsh, indeed a conviction for anything other than possibly assisting after the fact would be harsh. If however, he has made a choice to go out and be a part of another person's murder, then 38 years isn't that big of sentence IMO.
