Would be in the top few batsmen in the Test team if he was playing now.

I reckon I could be in the top few if I padded up. Our batting stocks are in a sad state at present, but I guess that's not news to anyone.

Ask anyone in Perth; he's apparently a massive dickhead.

yeah i've heard around the traps he's not the most well liked going. but who knows, maybe maybe not. sometimes a few people say something and these things escalate.

Shouldn't come into it if somebody is making runs.

if you're gonna be a dickhead you've got to give the selectors no choice but to pick you and that will generally mean not just outperforming your rival candidates, but well outperforming. rightly or wrongly personality does come into a bit, only a bit but sometimes it's enough to pick someone over someone else. No one wants to be sitting around waiting to bat for an hour or however long and one of your teammates is in the changerooms/balcony talking the biggest of loads of bollocks you've ever heard.

Definitely wouldn't be against taking him to England as back-up, but I feel the blokes in the thread have summed it up pretty well :thumbsu:

I'm not sure he qualifies as a dickhead, but he certainly is there is/was a perception that he wasn't the greatest team man at times and when you are borderline that stuff really costs you.

I am prepared to say that he has made massive improvements in this area since he took over the captaincy of Derby and now Middlesex. He will prove to be an excellent coach in time. Unfortunately he appears to have missed the boat at Test Level but if the opportunity arose he would certainly make the most of it.

Is Rogers actually best XI?

Cowan's previous shield seasons were just as good when he was selected.

I'm not gonna check cricinfo and compare their stats but I'm sure Rogers first class average would be a mile in front of Cowan and Rogers has been piling runs for years not just an 18 month period.

Anyway, I'm not saying he has to open, we can't find 6 decent batsmen to fill a team at the moment so I don't mind if he bats in the middle order. I also don't mind if we have a whole top 6 full of openers. If they are our best 6 batsmen.

we could go the NSW route from 10/11 (i think that season) and have 5 left handed opening batsmen in the top 6. warner, hughes, jaques, maddinson, katich

and usman khawaja came into the team for the final, who was an opener at grade level before elevation into the state team.

we could've done that in the test team at one stage - hayden, langer, katich, jaques, elliott, rogers... pretty sure they all played first class cricket alongside each other.
