The major mistake I believe the police made was in not releasing the video of the MM, plus failing to identify him from among Jane's "contacts", given that her evident pleasure at seeing the MM is not indicative of speaking to a stranger.

I remain very surprised that the "Bogsy" lead from Jane's friend never came to light during the investigation. Why didn't she pass it on to her local police after Jane went missing? It would at least have indicated someone older than Jane – which would fit the MM in the video (even from the rear).

No the major mistake I believe, was not matching the attacks in Huntingdale in the first place in the 1980's!
All B&E's etc. etc. WAPOL let them all "slide". They had BRE fingerprints from a Huntingdale B&E on a sliding door

Not joining the dots initially with the attack on Wendy in Hollywood Hospital - in broad daylight - and in work uniform and a guilty conviction (because WAPOL charged BRE with common assault and not a more serious crime)
It's said BRE was sent to a course on "sex offenders" - which hasnt been released to the public - so we can assume BRE had form and this was all hushed up by Telstra... etc. or, NOT connected on any WAPOL data base !

To be fair the MM could have been the back of any 20yo male in WA

WAPOL had no "join the dots" - sex offenders /juvie/ list across the suburbs to connect on a full database of Perth crimes.

I suggest you read Bret Christian's book - inside the hunt for a serial killer " Stalking Claremont " He is the only Perth journo who owns The Post Newspaper (Western Suburbs free newspaper) - who highlighted the connection between the KK case and found out lots of inside information...

Telecom not handing over ALL the "who drove what car" - was it because BRE's father worked for Telecom/Telstra and covered for his poor young BRE ? ? so many fuucken unanswered questions ! Still not answered

BRE had form as a teenager and was not arrested until he was in 2016 as the CSK. I hope someone soon goes for his Superannuation - all of it.

Nowadays, if you had that sort of form as a teenager, you'd be receiving psychiatric treatment, and possibly be on some psych medications (probably involuntary). And have a regular psychologist (if can find/afford one).

Did the Public and/or Private Health system not ever provide Psych treatment to u18 teens back in the early 80's in Perth?

Or did BRE's parents just never seek medical help for his u18 behavior?
(Assuming BRE and WA Police never crossed paths in regards to BRE's behavior as an u18?)

That the presiding judge, at sentencing made remark which I thought was quite unusual, that he was not handed BREs medical history, is significant.

IMO he abruptly stopped offending in Huntingdale because he got caught and was sent for treatment where he was flattened on meds.

There may have been some sort of a agreement made between the prosecution and the defence to withold all that material because I'm pretty sure Carmel made mention early in that she was waiting for all BREs medical records so we can assume she probably got them and would have had them before he pled guilty to the KK rape.

Is this just poor journalism, or is there more to the story we have been told by WAPOL? since when did they have their sights on BRE for a long time? when did he repeatedly lie to them about his crimes? the way the comment is in the article, it sounds like the cops knew about BRE for years, and he had been interviewed numerous times, where he lied about his involvement in the crimes.

I daresay poor journalism.

BRE repeatedly lied to Police about his crimes during his Police Interview(s) that were after he was arrested.

The WA Police investigation had long had their sights on the now convicted killer, but did not actually know his identity until later around 2016.
