Is it possible that Melbourne know they will have to sever ties with Oliver but need things to play out more to be able to terminate him?
Given the amount left on Oliver's contract I can't see how the two parties could possibly agree to
a settlement. I doubt Melbourne are keen to make a multi million dollar payout to a player that let them down and have that sitting in their cap.
It's like when you have underperforming staff member in any work place. You may know you want to fire them but you can't do it until you have enough evidence to do so without risk of legal repercussions.
That might be what Melbourne are doing and why they are keeping their cards close to their chest. I imagine the bar for outright termination would be quite high.
This is assuming the rumors are true. Just a possible theory.
Surely there’s a standard clause in these multimillion dollar player contracts that gives the club the option of cancelling it upon three strikes being reached.
Really hope Oliver gets the help he needs and comes back to play some great footy. Absolute superstar when up and going and such sad news at how much he is struggling. One of my favourite players to watch when at his best
Are there no performance milestones to achieve to get full pay?
By pay him out I meant negotiate a settlement so they wouldn't have to pay the whole amount and he wouldn't have to remain on their list. Similar to the Dane Beams situation. But what I was alluding to is the amount left on Oliver's contract is so much that its hard to imagine a middle ground that both parties could agree to.They can’t pay him out, he’d have to go on inactive list and be paid over his term. They may be able to accelerate the payout with spare cap space, but with a contending list, you wouldn’t think there’s much of that.
yep Brodie Grundy a classic example. Barely fired a shot since his set for life contract.
I don't think any club - even Melbourne - thought it was this bad.I don’t get the should have traded him when we had the chance. Does anyone really believe a club was committing to Oliver. 7 million over 7 years. A little bit of digging and any club interested would have walked away. Unless either Melbourne paid up a lot of the deal and took minimal picks. Or Oliver renegotiated his deal. Both unlikely.
Well if Melbourne didn’t they were asleep at the wheel!I don't think any club - even Melbourne - thought it was this bad.
It seems pretty clear they were. They seem happy to let Goodwin do what he likes.Well if Melbourne didn’t they were asleep at the wheel!
I’d say there was more than enough smoke around from his injury onwards to scare any club off a genuine trade that would work out for both clubs.I don't think any club - even Melbourne - thought it was this bad.

Tom Boyd settled so did beams. Why would he walk away from his contractual right? When you want a contracted player out of a club you pay, it’s that simple.
$7m gets you a lot of life, though.Tom Boyd settled so did beams.
If it’s best for his health you’d hope his family would be endorsing it.
More to life then money
Yep - his other options - stacking shelves at Coles?$7m gets you a lot of life, though.
