Is this article delusional or is it just me

Seems to suggest a top 5 pick is starters to extract him. Says Saints might not have the picks. Suggests that the monster contract he is on actually increases the trade value.

I think if Melbourne offered to pay 50% they still don’t get a top pick.

To me it’s maybe a pick 25 if Melbourne pay 30%.

Grundy is the comp for me and he had no off field risks and was in much better form.

There is clearly a market and Dees don’t need the cap space.

Why would they pay 50% for him to play for another team against them? To free up cap space they don’t need?

Anyway there’s already a thread on this in the trade board.

The article is 100% delusional.

Again, no need to do any mental gymnastics, look at the Treloar trade and go from there. Essentially worked out completely even in terms of points, with Pies still paying 33% of his salary for 5 years.

Then consider:

  • Treloar was still playing his best football
  • Treloar didn't come with a multitude of personal and health issues...
  • Treloar wasn't getting paid $1m per year (set to increase 1.2-1.3m per year after TPP increases)
  • Treloar contract length was only 5 years and obviously included less years into his 30's...

It's wild for anyone to think that a pick from Melbourne isn't going to have to be included in some way shape or form...

What I don't get is this. Your options are:

1. Pay Oliver $1M a year
2. Trade Oliver out but pay $500k of his salary. Replace him with another player who wants $500k.

Total spend on both is $1M. I would rather Oliver than the $500k bloke.

Collingwood forced out Treloar to meet cap requirements. There’s nothing to suggest Melbourne will boot out Oliver, and if they do it won’t be because they’ll break league rules if a deal doesn’t happen

It depends to what extent Oliver is being pried out v forced out.

If the Dees are happy to keep him and another club is trying to poach him, then it’s worth a top pick.

If the Dees are sick of his shit and are forcing him out, then yeah they’ll be paying a good pick to get someone to take his contract on, or pay a whack of his contract themselves.

Who knows?

Treloar was a cap squeeze.

Oliver is nothing of the kind. We just got Grundy, Brayshaw, Hibberd and Harmes off our books.

We also have Gawn, May, Melksham, Ben Brown, Tom McDonald, Tomlinson, Hunter and Joel Smith cap about to be freed up also.

Again I ask, why would we want to give up picks, and potentially one of the best mids in the game to free up cap when we will probably struggle to spend the cap space we are about to have as it is?

Like you said, no cap problem. Only reason would be if the club decides he is a detriment to the playing list and the club's future. Not saying he is but I think it would literally be the only reason.

As a supporter would you be comfortable if North handed their first pick to Melbourne for Oliver?

It’s ok to fantasize about a desperate club paying top pick but I just can’t see it. The only way you are in front is if he plays 7 years at close to his best form. Equally you could be paying $1.4m for a guy spudding it up in reserves.

I can see why Melbourne don’t need to trade off him at the moment.

No I don’t think with his contract he’s worth a top 2 pick (depending on Richmond & Norths season ending form). Plus we’ve invested heavily enough into the midfield - obviously he’s a gun but we need to invest elsewhere now.

But if a club that feels like they’re on the cusp wants him and doesn’t have a good midfield, they’ll be paying a decent first rounder absolutely.

If Melbourne want him gone in a fire sale for culture reasons, pick in the 20s/30s starts to be realistic.

I don’t tend to believe players & coaches in the media - we were told that Dusty had a career best pre-season this year - but to me Goodwin was as emphatic as I’ve heard anyone about a player staying. I’d be surprised if Oliver leaves now.

Hai

Clayton Oliver with all his millions is in debt to bikies? Ok

I'm not sure if its been mentioned but i have a good sauce for once.....
Tommy T told me that Oliver had a 30K gambling debt and moved in with Gawn so some leather clad, muscular men didnt shoot up his house as they threatened to do.

I joke about the names obviously but i trust the story.
So the Tiges and Blues will be trying to get in his ear, wanting to bring him over.
